I don't feel like point was well conceived for your points, so i decided to remove it, and edit my response.

My thoughts are even if i show ends happy, you can still feel sadness during parts of it, (which often can lead to crying)

For example this episode of chihayafuru

While this isn't what i would consider an anime that is trying to be sad. Their is a moment (about in the middle) when the main character realizes something that makes her, (and me) cry. So this anime made me cry.
