For me personally... Perfect aesthetic adaptation of the manga and anime, stunning visuals and presentation, some good ideas, a few cool moments and easter eggs, and solid performances hampered by amateurish/preachy writing, bad pacing, a lackluster soundtrack (particularly sinful considering how great the music was in the films and TV series), a really lame villain, and lackluster characterization for Major. Still an improvement over most other adaptations of this nature. I give it a solid C.

I just got home from seeing it and am not sure if they could even call it ghost in the shell. Its pretty much a whole new storyline with a few scenes from the anime film woven in, some of which are so warped they loose all their significance. An example is the garbage truck man who gets brain hacked, it looses all emotion and impact with zero setup and poor follow through in the interrogation compared to the anime. I cannot even recommend this to people who havn't seen the original as it comes across as a bland and generic cyberpunk b grade movie.

Yeah, they threw the first and second movie in a blender with 2nd Gig and made a plot out of it. For me personally, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be and I was entertained and enthused by the production and some cool action and character scenes (everything with Batou and Aramaki was awesome), but it was definitely leagues below the original stuff. Man, that plot twist could've been cool if it wasn't delivered so....ehhh

Well I just watched it and overall I thought the adaptation was pretty good in comparison to others , the writing could have been better in certain parts. I do wished they went into the deeper moments of Major's inner mind. I thought it was a bit fragmented but they focused her questioning who she , her identity.

Johansson is a pretty good actor and she said this character was very difficult to work with . I thought an excellent cinematographer would have captured those moments better. Some of her movements seem stiff, more "robot" like I wondered if she was directed so that way but this is basing on the first movie or the book. But with all the controversy , she acted as the character and not as a japanese person.

There were weak set-up for certain scenes but of course those who has seen the anime movie would notice those. The cohesion of the team didn't quiet get there to me , but the relationship between Batou and Major did come across strongly.

Like director Mamuro Oshii , when it comes to Johansson as Major , I thought it fit her becuase of the nature of this title and out of all the actress out there ,It is understandable why they picked her, since she does have an international audience.

As for the effects, there was one scene there that you can tell it is CG and I thought it was weak but the rest are very impressive, its very believable. The city environment gave me a feel of Blade Runner but way better.

Also my hubby really wanted to see that mullet hairdo of Togusa it wasnt puffy enough
and wished he was japanese. Togusa is suppose to be the youngest member of the team( that actor looks like in his late 40's ) and good looking...with the mullet hairdo

and everybody loved the dog

Plan on watching tonight...

Watched with a group who didn't know the story ahead of time. They confessed they were totally confused by the storyline, that it had too many holes (unexplained situations). Personally, I thought it lacked Major's introspection, which would have created better cohesion. There were deviations, which I expected, but some scenes were spot-on. Especially at the beginning. If I'm not mistaken, the song during the ending credits is the one from the opening sequence of the first movie. Overall it was *eh* maybe a 6.5 out of 10.

Also, was disappointed the Depeche Mode song was only in the trailer.

Just got back from seeing it earlier this afternoon.

It's actually pretty good. No, it's not great but I think if you go in with the right expectations you will probably enjoy yourself. It's not a shot for shot remake of the anime. It's not as smart as the anime, though it's not as dumb as some people say. In the end, it just does feel more like "inspired by GITS" than "adapted from GITS" and I think that's okay. If it were a shot for shot remake people would just be complaining about how lacking in creativity they were instead of complaining about how it's not the same.

The weakest element was definitely the writing. The best actors in the world (and I'm not saying these were them) couldn't have made some of this stuff sound normal, and there was far too much reliance on spelling out the whole Ghost in the Shell situation using those exact words. The writing doesn't really respect the audience enough and makes some otherwise good scenes feel less than they should.

I also found the movies need for an objective villain to be overbearing, especially in the final battle. GitS never really needed a Bad Guy and it didn't here either.

Anyway, don't go into it expecting a classic like the anime is and you should be fine. It's not really that bad.

We just got back from seeing it as well.

While I think the effects and visuals were well done, like some others have said, the pacing was off in places and the story was lacking. I agree with StriderShinryu that it was good, but not great. It seemed to me that what was really done was take the base of the story and build upon it to make it more palatable to a Western audience, as a whole. It had elements that were easier to grasp, simply put. However, going into it expecting the worst, I was surprised to find I rather enjoyed it.

I was personally disappointed. Story lacked flow and pacing. Canon completely ignored which would have been ok if it was interesting and fit but its doesn't.

So I'd say this, if this is your favorite anime prepare to be disappointed. If you like the genre and don't know much about the story then you may find it enjoyable.

So I've had time to mull over the live action GiTS movie, I think it was more a starting point release. Back story developer for a sequel is how I saw it. I knew going in that it wasnt going to follow the previous movie to the tee, and that it would have differences, every live action movie is like this. However for what it was, I am impressed.

saw I yesterday, I knew from interviews with the director that this was a guy who new ghost in the shell inside and out and it does show, and that he wasn't trying to remake it as much as he was trying to make an original story, that's fine and I liked it. however I will say just because he knew the story that doesn't mean you have to be heavily reliant on remaking old shot's just because you can, that's what distracted me if your going to make something that's taking from source material but meant to be original don't overuse old shot's, yes those shot's are memorable but there's nothing new to like, i'm not even saying don't remake old shot's that's what fan-service is but there's such a thing as over saturation. overall an ok story exploring the major in a whole new way having only seen the first 2 movies and arise I can say it was nice to see a story in which major kusinagi is actually trying to learn about her past from before she was changed.

I will also say i'm annoyed that the soundtrack of the shelling scene only happened in the credit's and not the actual scene that would have been nicer and would have been an example of fan-service done right.

Confusing, and it got a bit boring at times.

The action scenes were nice, although I wished they gave Beat Takeshi more bad a** action scenes (his were too short!).
