You guys ever play this, I guess, game, when you're in a car ride or something and you're just thinking about something. Ten or so minutes later, you realize that you're on a thought totally different from the one you started with. Then you try to go back thought by thought and reconstruct how you got from the first thought to the last. It's so much fun; it's like that word game where you get the first and last word and like in every step you can only change one letter but it has to be a word still until you get to a totally different word. Do you guys experience this?

I don't know whether or not you're asking us to discuss this phenomenon, share our experiences, or if you're simply just blurting this random chain of thoughts out in the forums.

I believe Jacque Derrida referred to this as the contiguity of thought ~ basically, we are constantly thinking. And the idea of this constant stream of thought will link us to different thought processes, that may eventually deviate from the original or originating thought process.

It's not an entirely new thought, and you're not alone in noticing this phenomenon. However, unless you really want to discuss this, please make it clear and edit the first post of your thread. Besides that, I don't know if there's much to discuss, besides asking others if they really experience this.

Besides that, this isn't a new concept, and it has already been explained. In fact, the contiguity of thought is precisely what allows works of fiction to be read, or what makes stories possible.

This seems like an ED thread. Too much thinking, explaining, and writing.

Going back through your thoughts is like backtracking in most aspects of life whether it's: backtracking on your actions, history, weather patterns, etc.

Everything, including your thoughts, branch out into more ideas where one or two original thoughts may have created them all. These are all connected through transition elements where a relation exists between each consecutive thought through one or more common factors. It's not only interesting analyzing the connecting points that lead us to each thought; what I find more fun is the reasoning behind how you came to go in that direction over the many other possibilities you may have gone to since several other ideas within the thought existed.

I do it all the time especially in debates in class we start on one topic and then as each person has their say it has gone through several topic changes but nobody knows where each change happened. Also if you ever listen to a group of girls talking you should see how many conversations they can get through in probably thirty minutes. I know i can get through alot of topics in one conversation. But the fun thing is they dont even realise theyve changed the topic and just keep going.
I would try to sort out how and when a topic changes and how it fits into the start or the end but thats usually after a time of extreme boredom.

I use an example from Friends to explain this phenomenon. Basically, the character Phoebe (played by Lisa Kudrow) remembers she has to visit her father when she sees a hamburger placed on the table of the local pub they frequent. Her response, as to how she thought of her father upon seeing the hamburger went like this:

What do you think of when you see a hamburger? McDonald's, right? And... 'Old McDonald had a... FARM...' And my dad is a... FARMacist? Ugh...

And with that, exit, Phoebe, stage right.

As long as the mind can combine to concepts in a contiguous fashion, you've got an endless cascade of thought processes just flying in there, and the way you think and the things you've experienced determines what sort of connections you will see in the different things you think of.

Most likely... I really love those times when you're listening to music & there's background noise, and you're so deep in your thoughts that you don't notice the music nor the noise.. Sadly that sensation stops when you notice that you're no longer noticing the noise outside your head....

It happens all the time in conversations, you talk about cheese, then suddenly you are talking about how u peed your pants. Cant stay on the same thought or topic forever, and its all connected in some way

I do that in church . It seems that I do most of my thinking there . =/
I gind myself thinking of something different than my first thought
and so I backtrack to what lead me to think about the topic .
It happens to me all the time and apparently to everyone , like what edsamac said .

I have a problem doing that in posts, you can almost see my train of thought going crazy, or i'll start writing a post and have to pause because one of my clients walked in and i have to take care of their taxes and i never end up getting back to the post i was originally making and my train of thought was completely different than before, However, i think it's ok that people do this, since i'm sure a lot of people have done it, that may be why there's so many really short posts in the forums, maybe it's just short attention spans, so many kids these days are being diagnosed with ADD or ADHD that i really wish i would have bought some damned stock in those pharmaceutical companies so long ago, but i didn't and now i'm poor, well not reallly THAT poor, but poor enough, at least i'm not sleeping in a miata, pregnant and with a cat... so things have been worse... wait... what was i talking about again?

I've done that occasionally yes. Usually i don't put all that much effort into it though, it's more like, wait, wtf was i just thinking about, that has nothing to do with roses!?!?! O_o
