Even though the browser streaming is pretty annoying, the ps4 app worked pretty well for me. It used to play the videos smoothly for most of the time and, if that pesky auto-adjustment based on my bandwidth ever made the quality go down, I'd just re-start the episode from where I left off and it would stay high-quality until the end.

But ever since the latest update, the ps4 app has been annoyingly dropping and increasing quality mid-episode every few minutes. It will start with max resolution and quality, only to drop a bit, sometimes drop a lot, to then increase again, and drop again some seconds later and that's annoying as all hell.

I get that the app automatically checks my internet speed to determine resolution and bitrate, but this is ridiculous. It used to work well enough before and, as far as I know, my internet connection is not THAT unstable.
Due to higher circumstances, I have to use wireless and the place where I setup my ps4 has to use a d-link repeater in order to get a better connection. All other services are working fine.

Is there any way to circumvent the ps4 app's automatic quality settings? Because with the latest patch they clearly screwed it up when it comes to optimization.

Your local connection to your ISP isn't the only determining factor, but do you experience the same issues when using an Ethernet cable to connect to your router?

Nop. It goes smoothly on cable. But, as I said, due to some circumstances it's just not an option right now.
