The EU will not back down in its support for Spain’s demands when it comes to the Rock of Gibraltar in Brexit negotiations, senior European diplomats have said. The European council, whose members comprise the EU member states, shocked Downing Street by saying the British overseas territory could be included in a trade deal between London and Brussels only with Spain’s agreement.

Early on Sunday, a former Conservative leader waded into the row by claiming that Theresa May would be prepared to go to war to protect the territory as Margaret Thatcher once did for the Falklands. In comments that were immediately criticised by Labour and the Lib Dems as inflammatory, Michael Howard said there was “no question” of Britain weakening its stance with regards to the sovereignty of one of its overseas territories

can someone fill me on what this issue is?

Spain has no claim to Gibraltar other than "its close to us so we should have it", Gibraltar was legally given to Britain over 300 years ago for their roll in the Spanish war for succession. Gibraltar
British parliament still possesses a copy of said treaty, and the people of Gibraltar wish to remain British.
Really Britain should just invite Gibraltar to join the United Kingdom as then Spain would have no choice but to treat Gibraltar the same as England.
Also just to point out Britain has owned Gibraltar for 304 years whereas Spain has owned Gibraltar for 251 years.

As an American, I trust Great Britain and Northern Ireland over the EU to have possession of Gibraltar, but the local legal citizens have the right to choose their future (as does Scotland has the right to choose). Any other choice is tyranny, however once chosen it is not to be revisited for at least twenty-five to thirty years nations need stability to thrive for their citizens.

Wouldn't it be odd if after all this time, what kicks off world war 3 is not the middle east, USA, Asia, Russia, etc... but fucking Europe again

In their last two votes, the Girbaltan people have boted 99% and 98% to be British over being Spanish... so I don't think it should be seen as much of an issue. What next, they vote 97%? I suppose eventually it would get to the 49% needed if it always changes by 1%!

Spain claims it because its part of Iberia. Gibraltar doesnt want to rejoin Spain and turn to shit. British has had Gibraltar for so long the culture is British and they don't abandon their citizens. The EU is a clusterfuck and can't make intelligent decisions.
