Yet another in a long list of instances of Russia demonstrating it has barely matured since the days of the Czars, if at all. The main defense against this allegation from Russian authorities is that there apparently are no gay people in Chechnya. I mean, they're probably not wrong... not now anyway.

Also this:

I haven’t had a single request on this issue, but if I did, I wouldn’t even consider it,” Kheda Saratova, a Chechen activist who is on Kadyrov’s human rights council, told a Russian radio station. “In our Chechen society, any person who respects our traditions and culture will hunt down this kind of person without any help from authorities, and do everything to make sure that this kind of person does not exist in our society.

Methinks the U.N. might want to do a little more than just throw a few sanctions at these people.

People like Vitaly Milonov really need to go away.

Sadly it looks like it's everyone except Milonov who's going away.

I could probably make a "in Soviet Russia" joke about that, but that would imply that comparing Russia in its current state to the USSR wouldn't be completely appropriate.

It appears the region is an extremely conservative Muslim majority, headed by someone who supports honor killings. Ramzan Kadyrov is the leader of this specific region.

Damn, the United Nations are a useless bunch. Warnings are useless without force.

Believe me, the more you look at what the UN does and doesn't so the worse it gets.

What are you talking about? Russia is clearly the leader in Human Rights! /sarcasm

I have a gay friend who lives in West Russia, and his boyfriend who lives in East Russia. He lived with his bf for a while before it was found out his bf was gay. His parents have locked him in his house, took away all forms of communication and wont let him leave. Russia is fucked.

That's fucking disgusting, any nation that condones kidnapping is one I want to see get it's shit straightened out. I'm not saying I want a war against them, but clearly heavier opposition is needed.

Update; Chechnya has now achieved the actual nazi practice level of horrible, I'm sure they're very proud of themselves.

What Chechnya does in a lot of ways is horrible, but I would like to point out they are an autonomous region (called Republic) and Russia is sadly not fully governed by law.. and so it is assymetrically divided. It's hard to control that place and some say it controls Moscow with the phrase "Stop feeding the Caucasus"

Not all of Russia or Russian is like that, I promise. Chechnya is run by its own dictator. Most people, they will not give you such treatment like this. But this is not a normal situation. This is Chechnya, the place that had a war with Russia to secede and previous in covered with violent islamic extremism. Chechnya is its own country in practice.. Think of Chechnya like Taiwan to China maybe.

I am from another Republic and if you are Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Trans or anything else then I accept you no matter what. If I can run for election then I will try to make a better situation for LGBTQ. And especially with anime or furry or brony community, and with many online in general, there are those who will accept you for who you are because they have more exposure to it.

There is a lot of reasons historically why Russia (and not just Russia, most Eastern European and Central Asian countries are like this, Ukraine, Poland, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Rumania, etc.) but if you interact with people outside of a "normal" place and instead on here or another close-knit community, you will see that they are people too who just want to live equally if you did not think so already. To give to them equal rights, it will take knowing what that means, and that is where education must be made.

(I keep making edits to make sure I am making points in clear English)

I don't understand all the hubbub over this when this and worse is happening right now in Afganistan, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia etc. Under the same doctrine too. Yet no outcry from western media outlets comparing them to Nazis like they are the chechens. Is it just because they are trying to say this is Putin causing this even though it didn't happen in russia?

because it would be considered islamophobia and for some reason, here in the west any negative comment against Islam is Islamophobic. The media and muslims living in the west ignore how Islamic countries treat their women and gay people.
