Well from what I've heard the story is mainly in the viewpoint of Boruto not the naurto characters. Although I would assume that Masashi Kishimoto will throw in some Naruto references to give us a nostalgic feeling. I would say that you don't have to watch naruto to enjoy boruto. It's just my personal opinion.

I myself would start from the beginning to gain a deeper and better understanding of the premise of the show. However, I'm not you, unless we switched bodies and switched brains to change our thinking, making ourselves to make a decisive decision that we are our true selves, but the truth in anything but that, making us to believe that we are just thinking that we are not our really true selves, because we are really not, however...(Drones on for a couple more hours...)

No skip Naruto just go to Boruto.
It will take a long ass time if you start Naruto then to ship.
Overall its 720 episodes

Now I started Naruto in mid 2016, Now its the beginning of 2017 and I'm in shipiden Season 12 Eps 280's. I still have 220 eps to catch up to.

Naruto Shippuden is 500 eps even.
I would've liked to finish more before Boruto Started but in that case I would just be rushing and not properly enjoy the series so my advice is just watch Boruto or read the manga to speed catch up.

You should look up a skippable filler guide, then watch through the full series.

I would see little to no point in skipping Naruto. Also (coming from someone who avoided the series for over half its run because I thought it would be a stupid) it has a ton of surprisingly good content. And you really gain appreciation for and become invested in the characters after watching so many episodes.
