Ummm... is it okay to make a 2D idols in general thread?

For the music, anime, and games, but mostly for the anime, since that's usually the only thing that gets made available outside of Japan.

Please let me know if I missed some... I probably did, this genre is huge. Also let me know if any of the others have official youtube channels. .... please don't link to unofficial uploads, though, that's against the rules.
And please let me know if I need to tweak anything to make it more forum-rules-compliant...

So........
~ Favorite units?
~ Favorite songs?
~ Best story? Animation?
~ Favorite costumes?
~ Favorite seiyuu? (Since a lot of the same ones tend to be in several, at least with the guys)

Okay, added.

Is that vocaloid-based? Tsukiuta also has a vocaloid connection. The songs are written and produced by popular vocaloid producers.

(Also, in case anyone doesn't know, Tsukiuta has male groups and female groups. The male groups are Six Gravity and Procellarum, and the female groups are Fluna and SelaS. The members all represent months - Fluna and Gravi are December-May, and Procella and Selas are June-November.
. . . . . February's idols are twins named Koi and Ai, and their birthday is Valentine's Day. Here's their duet song -> https://youtu.be/fdu6tm-3i0A. )

I'll probably edit this post in the future with more information, but for right now.

[email protected] also has Cinderella Girls, which I believe is on Crunchyroll (not 100% sure), but oddly enough you can also watch the full series on Daisuke's official Youtube channel.

K-ON and Show by Rock are about rock bands rather than idol groups, I assume they don't count?

I just began Cinderella Girls this week. Watching it first because I decided to watch spinoffs with less positive reviews before I watch the original shows, which seems preferable to going in release order. At three episodes so far I really like it, and it's fun to see the characters in the currently airing comedy short - /the-idolmster-cinderella-girls-theater

The only modern idol group anime I've completed so far is Macross Delta, which I watched at the same time as the 1982 original. I thought both series started well and got worse, for different reasons. I wish Delta's second half had done more of what its first half did - the "Be brave and sing to save everyone" moments, which reminded me of Doctor Who: A Christmas Carol, one of my favorite... things... ever. (Never seen Doctor Who? Doesn't matter. A Christmas Carol is one hour, go watch it. I showed it to my mom and she cried.) (And of course I still cri evrytiem)

https://myanimelist.net/anime/28013/Macross_%CE%94

Favorite song: Walkure Attack!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nbMH-vbM3P8

But the consensus best song is pretty clearly Giraffe Blues.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4R0JijjR70

Because I love that over-the-top sci-fi idol mashup insanity, I plan to watch these:

/akb0048
https://myanimelist.net/anime/12149/AKB0048

/symphogear
https://myanimelist.net/anime/11751/Senki_Zesshou_Symphogear__Meteoroid-Falling_Burning_and_Disappear_Then
https://myanimelist.net/anime/15793/Senki_Zesshou_Symphogear_G__In_the_Distance_That_Day_When_the_Star_Became_Music
https://myanimelist.net/anime/21573/Senki_Zesshou_Symphogear_GX__Believe_in_Justice_and_Hold_a_Determination_to_Fist

And this one...

https://myanimelist.net/anime/1694/iDOLMSTER_Xenoglossia

...allegedly handles the characters poorly if you've seen the original Idolmaster, which is why I'm going to watch Xenoglossia first.

EDIT: No singing in Xenoglossia. Weird.

Skip Beat seems to be about just one girl, but it's regarded as a modern classic. 8.27 on MAL.
/skip-beat
https://myanimelist.net/anime/4722/Skip_Beat

Locodol (Local Idol) is described as a small-scale idol show that's more of a slow-paced slice-of-life. Sounds like my kind of thing.
/locodol
https://myanimelist.net/anime/22189/Futsuu_no_Joshikousei_ga_Locodol_Yattemita

And when I've watched all that and Love Live, I'll finally take on the great beast:
https://myanimelist.net/anime/15061/Aikatsu

A friend got into Aikatsu and it became possibly his favorite anime. Problem is, it's 178 episodes. That's why I'm saving it for last.

...And he hasn't even started PriPara yet. That's another 140.

https://myanimelist.net/anime/23135/PriPara

P.S. CR also has this older idol show from 2001:
/chance-pop-session
https://myanimelist.net/anime/2495/Chance_Triangle_Session

WUG is on CR too - /wake-up-girls

Okaaaaay list is getting a little massive, might scrap the list idea, or at least scrap the links... ?

. . . . . . . . Show By Rock counts because Hosoyan is in it <3
So I guess band shows count. K-On can count, too. And that other new thing, Bang Dream. And Band Yarouze.
Edit: Band shows should be bishounen/bishoujo/moe focused, and also sort of be created with the intent of actually selling the music... so like, Beck or Fuuka or Nana wouldn't really count. Same with Skip Beat. (sorry)

. . . . anyone else watching ✧・゚*・゚✧:* *:・゚*StarMyu*・゚✧*:・゚✧? It's the best because Yoshimasa Hosoya's character is in the main group <3

Ah okay, I only mentioned Skip Beat because CR has it tagged as "idol" (though tags on CR are... unreliable) /showtag?tag=idol&type=2

Idol Jihen just aired last season, but apparently wasn't received well. The concept was idols as politicians.

It probably has "idol" as a topic but I mean more like... so, these things like [email protected], Love Live, TsukiUta, Idolish 7, etc., which are made as like... 2D idols. Like, the characters don't exist just in the story, you're supposed to think of them like you'd think of real idols. And definitely in a moe/bishounen/bishoujo way.
Most of them start out releasing singles, and merchandise, then they make either a game or an anime or both, but the characters/music exist outside of that...

Yeah, it's a thing. It's like, the most popular thing in Japan right now, besides Fate/GO and Touken Ranbu and other games like that (though Love Live, Ensemble Stars, etc. are overlap).

. . . . . . . . StarMyu isn't that, okay, but it's like. Close.

Yes <3<3 There is <3<3<3

. . . . . . this one doesn't look that interesting, but other male idol shows are <3<3<3<3 TsukiUta and Marginal #4 are the best.

I will probably watch Side M, but like... low expectations.

High expectations for TsukiPro, though. Soara and Growth are <3<3<3<3<3

Waaaahhhh... Hosoyan is in Show By Rock?? Must go watch it. He's my favorite in StarMyu. (And just about anything he's in.)

I'm a big UtaPri fangirl. I love Mamo as Tokiya, naturally. But I also adore Kenichi Suzumura as Masato Hijirikawa. Haruka can have Tokiya and I'll take Masato. lol But what I really love the most is the music. There's so much great UtaPri music and so many great singers involved. Mamo, SuzuKen, Suwabe Junichi, Taniyama Kishou, Maeno Tomoaki and Aoi Shouta are my favorites.

Here's a few more: Most of these are smartphone games, but, you never know, they could get mdae into anime one day (hopefully):

-Tokyo 7th Sisters (idol rhythm game) YT: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCz1sbEbWYHH0wZr2tHzD7Kg

- Ichu (idol rhythm game) YT: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPx8uxmJmySdzDdsimXjh4Q

-Boyfriend (Kari) Kirameki Note (idol rhythm game; a spinoff of Boyfriend Kari) YT: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCa311U-X3H6XiLuTA1WHwcA

-Girlfriend Note (idol rhythm game; a spinoff of Girlfriend Kari) YT:https://www.youtube.com/user/GFkariOfficial/featured
Anime: http://www.crunchyroll.com/girl-friend-beta

-8 Beat Story (idol rhythm game) YT: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCf-DUq0AuNKB6K72V4wCUlQ/feed

I'm in idol hell, and I don't think anyone can pull me out (I have too many idol games and hardly any storage on my phone. Help). Not a huge fan of the Macross series (well, not Frontier any way. Not watched Delta yet) but I've gotta admit, their songs are pretty good. I'm also absolutely in love with Blast from band yarouze and I'm addicted to their music <3

Also, yeah Starmyu is probably one of my favourite shows that's airing this season (might be due to most of the hyped shows going to Amazon and me not watching any of them).

Apparently, he plays a shirtless leopard guy in ShinganCrimsonz. I haven't seen it though ^_^;
But yes, he's perfect <3

Ahhh, I'm not that into UtaPri, but I love Aoi Shouta <3 He's in Tsukiuta and Magi4, too.

His unit in Magi4, Unicorn Jr., probably has the most interesting/creative music of any of these things. ( F.A. -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GuB1cphMOko After Burner -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1vnK_wfVp8 (especially the second track on the first link, and the fourth on the second link (6:33 in the video) ) (official uploads)

They also have the best name... Unicorn Jr... <3

Ahhh Youtube has been throwing songs from that at me because of seiyuu.
If the trend continues, they probably will get anime ^_^;

Yeesss <3<3 ahaha I was only interested in Starmyu and The Royal Tutor, so I'm okay ^_^;

. . . . . Ageha's dancing. I feel like I shouldn't be into Ageha, but I am.

I only have girl idols on my agenda right now, but I did watch an episode of UtaPri a few years ago at a friend's bidding, and I was intending to continue but haven't yet. I seem to have a better enjoyment track record with reverse harems than I do with normal romance shows, ha. Would be more fun to watch with a fan though.

Speaking of Aoi Shouta, he recently finally got me over my lifelong bias against Japanese male vocals with excessive vibrato. I love the chorus of the Hatsukoi Monster ED:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=egzMTuiw0Hs&feature=youtu.be&t=50s

(Sadly the band shown on screen does not seem to even exist in the actual show.)

EDIT: I should add, before someone else brings it up, the Hitchcockian classic '98 anime film Perfect Blue is often mentioned in idol discussions because it portrays an idol's psychological breakdown as she is gradually exploited and victimized by the industry. I heard one guy say he can't enjoy anything about idols after watching it. But it was the first anime about idols I watched, and it didn't have that effect on me. I guess it's just that I like the romanticizing of the dream, regardless of what the reality can be.
https://myanimelist.net/anime/437/Perfect_Blue

It's not like being a cowboy, a pirate, a ninja, or a knight was as glamorous or desirable in reality as it is in most stories. But happy stories aren't less valid than "gritty" ones.
