Episode 8

With Soun dead, the families have gathered, and Kureichiro is quite a humble guy unlike Soun and the twins. Yashiro sure is into science with that mega-sized lab there and using fancy science to make that juice, which is pretty nasty. In the meantime, Yajiro is leaving Kyoto, and Yasaburo is being asked to marry Kaisei in order to avoid the hot pot, which doesn't exactly sit well with him. While those two don't get along, they do agree that it's for the best they don't get married because seeing her undoes his tanuki transformation. Yasaburo sure has lots of questions ahead of him because being someone's meal is the last thing he needs to be at this point.

Episode 8's ending scene was powerful. Yasaburou and Kaisei's relationship is very tense and it's understandable with what they feel right now.

I love how this series portrays drama so far as it makes the scenes look impacting with the word usages, character expressions, etc. Such an underrated series this season.

Episode 9

After spending so much time at the bottom of the well, Yajiro is finally out to see the world. And then Trick Magister elections are coming up and having Benten being the observer is quite a problem, so Nidaime is asked to observe the election. But of course, Benten just isn't going to take things lying down, so she comes in to mess with the tanukis that have gathered. Those two have quite a history and rivalry with each other, and just when things were looking up for tanukis with Kureichiro and Yaichiro becoming buddies to put their family rift behind them, now this happens.

Oh man, Benten's entrance at that election was just epic. I love how she commands her authority no matter what her position is

This Nidaime and Benten rivalry thing is going to heat up for sure next episode and at its apex, I predict something big to blow up.

Episode 11

So Tenmaya and the Ebisugawas were behind the plot to make Yasaburo the sacrificial tanuki for the hot pot. In the meantime, Nidaime is observing the Trick Magister election, and the Ebisugawas are up to no good once again with Kinkaku framing Yashiro for killing Soun by planting the gun in his lab and causing an explosion, and after hearing the news, Yaichiro gives up being the Trick Magister. In the end, Yodogawa saves those two, and it turns out that the Kureichiro there that manipulated his way to being the Trick Magister is actually Soun in disguise as he faked his death, and the truth came out when Yajiro appears with the real Kureichiro. Quite a bizarre turn of events there, and that was some great drama.

Episode 11 was great.

Yasaburou's talk with his dad, Yaichirou taking action, and Gyokuran's role in this show are just so memorable. God, I'm going to miss this series next week when it's finished airing...

I have a feeling that the red string of fate theme will be an important part for the finale.

Nice cliffhanger, although I expect that neither will end up getting eaten. Not sure though, there's often a whiff of danger in this show.

Well, whew. I just finished watching season 1 and season 2 all ready for the last episode. This was a great series I put off for way to long. I do not know how it must of been to for all of you that watched Season 1 when it was new and thinking their was no more. Season 2 announcement must of been amazing for you guys.

Everything seems to be wrapping up nicely, looks like it will end fairly well. I love how Yaichiro and Gyokuran relationship actually worked out and how shes always at the shrine with them now. Even in episode 11 how she sticks with Yaichiro and helps her new family.

How could Keisei and Yasaburo possibly get married if she breaks his transformation just by seeing her? Maybe it will be fate, but I do not see how that ship could sail with such a big hole.

The only thing that bugs me, and maybe you all answered it long ago with other discussions, is Benten. She makes no sense to me. How does she eat Tanuki? The humans I understand because the tanuki hide from them. They are just animals. But in general, if human like sentience is shown in a speices, people consider it bad to eat them. I do not know a single person that could eat something that could speak full english (japanese) to you?

But Benten does know. How is this even an issue? How many Sci-fi and ficiton storys deal with eating sentient beings and it being wrong. I mean freaking Futurama delt with it and Popplers.

Was she doing it to try and distance herself from Yasaburo, who she obviously has a thing for? I really dont get it.

Episode 12 (Finale)

Now that Soun's charade has been exposed after faking his death, the time nears when the tanuki hot pot happens, and Tenmaya is out to shoot all of them. Those two get carried off to hell by the red demon, and then Nidaime and Benten battle each other in the skies with Nidaime emerging victorious. So the new year arrives, and Yaichiro is the Trick Magister, while Kureichiro lets everybody know that he totally disapproves of what Soun did. And then Yasaburo and Kaisei have a conversation to reflect as all the tanukis escaped the hot pot. While the way the conflict with Soun ended happened way too quickly, the fight with Nidaime and Benten was really something. That's a solid way to end things seeing that everybody made it.

Final Thoughts

This show picks up right where the first season left off, and this show improves on the first season as things took awhile before finding its groove midway through the first season, while here things are strong from the start having benefited from the foundation being established. The animation remains another great piece of work by P.A. Works, while the wacky nature of the show made for something without a dull moment. But above all, the drama is excellent and it gets stronger towards the end. As for gripes, my biggest one is the lack of development for Benten and to a lesser extent, Nidaime as they gave me the impression that they were going to have huge roles than they ended up having. So in comparison to the first season, this one certainly improves on it.

Grade: A- (low 9/10)

I pretty much agree with Bakanner's thoughts on this overall.

The story development was just really well done from start to finish and it felt like the show never left a gap despite several years since it lasted aired. Loved the comedy and character relationships as well. I have to admit, Nidaime and Benten's fight exceeded my expectations in the finale. That was just really well delivered. Between the action and drama, I felt this show was really well balanced.

Might give the novels a try in the future. Bravo to P.A. Works. You did good.
