I deeply love Sword Art Online - it is still my favourite anime (closely followed by the Fate series and Madoka) but I do see all of its flaws (and a few that aren't often mentioned) so I also understand why it isn't for everyone.

I think the biggest thing about SAO is that it is billed as being about a death game but in reality it is more a narrative exploration of the relationship between the virtual and real worlds. This dissonance creates a big gap between expectations and what you actually get that I think is a major contributor to all the hate (from the advertising you would expect something bleak and oppressive like Attack on Titan or Death Note, what you get is much more light and comedic, albeit with occasional tension).

The anime also struggles with adapting the source material- it is better structured in its second season (and arguably even from Alfheim despite probably being the weakest arc) because those books (and if you even vaguely like SAO you should pick up the books - they explain a lot of the things that big people about the anime) were written as complete and chronological stories - the Aincrad arc in the anime is pulled from out of order stories in books 1, 2, 8 and volume one of Progressive so it can't help but feel disjointed. The anime also doesn't do the best job of explaining what the characters are thinking, which is a big part of the source material.

That said, I still ultimately find it utterly entertaining, more so than other (often better produced) anime and it just resonates with me.

Ps. I don't get the hate on Asuna - but then she reminds me of how my wife plays games (Aincrad arc anyway) so I am inherently biased.

PPs. I also find it vaguely irritating that things that people find flawed in SAO are such a big deal when discussing it but those same flaws in other shows are routinely ignored. Log Horizon (which was an ok show to be fair) is a good example. Both Kirito and Shiroe are massively, unrealistically overpowered in their respective fields and represent nerd wish fulfilment on that respect. This is fine by me (though I grew up with 80s cartoons and action movies so maybe I just have a massive tolerance for overpowered heroes winning the day) but I don't get why it's a stick to beat SAO with but it's never mentioned in discourse about Log Horizon (I do get that Shiroe needs team mates to enact his godlike plans while Kirito does it all himself, but at the same time, SAO and its seed-based successors are more action-oriented, while Log Horizon is much more like a modern MMO so in context it is much of a muchness to me)

In my eyes, it's the definition of average. I certainly don't like it personally, but look at it only in terms of quality, it's 100% average.
I personally don't like it because of this, but it still became as popular as it did. We've all heard the generic "UGH KIRITO IS SUCH A SELF INSERT" or "BLAH THE FANSERVICE IS STUPID" but when it comes down to it, there's a shit ton of other anime with these same exact problems.
On the other hand, it did other things well. It took advantage of the game setting to create fanservice for fellow gamers like me in a manner that isn't just tits in your face with the occasional tentacle. Instead it was things like warp crystals or boss drops.
I'd be lying if I said that the game world is perfect because if ANY of the games in SAO were real, there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that they'd all be shit or unbalanced as hell. SAO only has swords so it doesn't appeal to people who like mage, support, or tank characters.
Alfheim is undescribable in how unbalanced the different races having different abilities being, along with no choices in character selection.
GGO has that ridiculous system that makes it so that you can SEE where the damn bullets will be and a pointless stat system that makes no sense as well.
Don't even get me started on things like "Nobody uses beam sabres because they're seen as hard to use."
Regardless, the anime itself gave a burst in the popularity of anime, and I can't hate it for that. For all of the shit it gets talked, that's only really there because of said popularity. If it wasn't super popular the anime would likely be a solid 7/10 for most because instead of dissecting and finding ANY reason to hate it because of it's popularity, it'd be skimmed over in favor of another popular show. For now it's sat at a 5/10 for me.
Overall, like I said, the anime is the definition of average. It's pros don't outweigh the cons. For most con there's a reasonable explanation however. The pacing is shit, but if it went any slower or faster it'd feel even more rushed or drag on way too long and break suspense. A lot of characters appear once then are barely mentioned again, but if they built the characters only for the second season to come around and make them appear even less, it'd make even less sense. It became popular for seemingly no reason, when in reality it became popular because it had an interesting plot idea that catered to gamers. Obviously a lot of these problems could just be fixed if they were removed entirely, but SAO isn't a quality anime. It's only average and built to pander to gamers in a way that will make non gamers understand.

tldr; It's average.
Also I'm 100% sure I've seen at least 3 other threads with this exact topic.

Ah, SAO. It's been few years since i watched it. I think it's good (Season 2 is better, just my opinion) but by no means, it's not perfect. I could name a few flaws, but just two which i think are the worst.

End of line.

I used to enjoy it, but as I explored more and more anime, SAO just keeps going downhill for me.

I admit, the first half of each season was enjoyable desoite being filled to the brim with plotholes and bad character design, among other things (season 1's first half was more enjoyable than season 2'as first half) but good god, the second halves in Alfheim were horrific.

At least in season 1 there was a reason for them to be there ('-' )

The final arc of season 2 was rsther good though, I just wish that it had been its own movie, rather than a little arc tacked onto the end of the show.

anyone else seen the SAO movie? it felt like a bit of a letdown. good things were: the music (yuki kajiura) and the action and seeing the characters returning obvs.. but I felt the sense of.. danger was way less than in S1

I liked the first 13 episodes when i watched them. After that, i just didn't enjoy the other episodes. I don't think it is terrible if you like that show. I think everyone makes the show out to be worse than it actually is. To me, it is average. I only hate the "SAO is the worst show in the history of shows" comments because they don't usually come off as thoughtful and insightful.

The people that say they do watch anime, considering SAO is an anime, are correct. What, in your opinion, qualifies someone to say that they watch anime?

I went to see it in Hollywood on March 1st, and I loved it! I do think they could have done so much more with Eiji than they did, but I understand it's primarily a Kirisuna film (which is why I love it since it's my OTP), so there were going to be sacrifices. The biggest crime was not having enough Suguha. >>

SAO is my favorite light novel series. The anime adapted the novels in an extremely disjointed manner, making the side stories more important, thus making the harem aspect more prominent than it actually is. Honestly I think they should have waited until the Progressive series was a little further in before adapting Aincrad, since Kawahara's writing there is vastly improved and he explains the system and gameplay much more detail.

Personally I think people just misunderstood SAO's purpose and came out extremely disappointed. Still, I can't tell them they're wrong for not liking it, but it just agitates me to no end seeing all the hateful and bitter comments coming from people trying too hard to look cool.

I think definetely the series is really good, I didnt pay attention to the harem aspect of it because I was too engaged in the story, and i enjoyed all arcs equally, I think people sometimes complain wayy too much. But yea the movie, id give a 7, I think maybe my enjoyment was less because I had this guy in front of me who kept blocking my view with his big head so I had to view the movie sideways lol.

I absolutely love the SAO series. It makes me laugh and the action sequences coupled with the music always give me a great entertainment experience.

I'm not saying it doesn't have it flaws, but I can look past them and enjoy myself. I just don't see the need to jump on the hate wagon over something, that I personally view as, trivial.

Reading a few comments, both here and on other forums, is prompting me to read the progressive light novels now...

Aw man that sucks! D: I really hate when that happens in the theater, you pay more attention getting comfortable you can't really immerse yourself in the movie. Honestly I think people crap on Fairy Dance arc too much, but I actually like it more than Aincrad. xD The fight with Sugou was pretty intense, and then just plain sad at the very end lol.
