Hey all,

I like a lot of Shonen anime, like One Piece, Attack on Titan or My Hero Academia. My favorite anime is definitely Erased, and I've been on an RWBY kick recently (loving the new season!).
Recently, I told a friend, whom I also thought loved RWBY, that I had got caught up on the latest season and wondered if she had also. She told me she had stopped watching because someone had ruined it for her (really disappointing). But, then she took a dig at the kind of anime I like by saying she didn't watch shonen anime anyways and explaining it as if I was completely naive to the different archetypes.
First of all, I think that's really arrogant of her to say, because it's like saying "I don't like Starbucks, because everyone else likes it." Second of all, it makes me wonder what she does like (I think it's basically shojo anyways because she likes Sailor Moon). And, third of all, it makes me wonder when RWBY got classified at shonen. I know it's really popular, but just because it's popular doesn't make it shonen right off the bat, right? Also, it's always been in English and on Rooster Teeth, so "not technically an anime" has always been a thing with it anyways, kind of like Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra.
Then, I told another friend about RWBY and she was like, "I'm glad you like something I don't. The characters were really forgettable and it was never really an anime anyways."

So, I want to know two things:
1) What's with all the sudden RWBY hate?
2) Just because I like shonen, does that make me mainstream and subpar in my tastes, as my friend implied? And, what is with all the shonen hate? I think there are some pretty good shonen anime out there that people are probably missing out on just because they don't like this type of anime.

What do you guys think? Discuss.

There's nothing wrong with shonen, so no. You just have crap friends, apparently.

As to RWBY, it wasn't what I wanted to watch, so I didn't. People turn against popular things all the time, though, because that makes them feel special.

i think people should just enjoy whatever anime they like and understand that different people have different tastes.
as for liking shounen - plenty of girls like shounen. nothing wrong with that.

Never understood the RWBY hate. It is not he CGI from what I can tell from the comments and animation.

And no, you are not subpar in your tastes, though shounen is mainstream, as the demographic is the largest and most consistent type of viewers who watch anime. In most cases, shounen is typically in reference to battle shounens, much like the trimumvirate of Bleach, One Piece, and Naruto.

Tastes is subjective. You like what you like. If you do not think you should like it, then I think you should hear out the reasons of detractors, so that you may get a clearer picture of what you are watching. This mainly applies to anime traditionally not considered wholesomely moral, but I think the introspection value is high enough if you are willing to discuss.

You do you. I think it is disrespectful to imply something about a specified fan like yourself, versus the general demographic to an extent, or saying that they are a monolithic entity who watch the show for the exact same reason.

I have to admit, I dislike most of the popular shounen, then there are lesser ones that fizzled out unfortunately. I would not say of the battle shounens that I am a fan.

Ah, the need for superiority. Reminds me of the time before CR and Funi.

"You stream videos? You fucking noob! Downloading is the way to watch anime!"

My response: I do not fucking care, I do not fucking care, go fuck yourself and your downloads, you piece of shit.

1. Never seen RWBY, so idk.
2. If you like it, you like it, and that's all there is to it. I personally am a fan of shonen, though I am the demographic it is aiming for, so it makes sense. However, I like shoujo, seinen, josei, and pretty much everything else as well. Just watch what you want to watch.

I'm not a big Shonen fan. In fact I call the big 3 (Bleach, Naruto and One Piece) the road trip's from hell anime. But if you like it then THAT is all that matters. People have different tastes which is why Baskin Robbins has so many different flavours of ice cream. I guess I should admit that I don't know anime genres the animes I really like in terms of Shonen or Shujo, etc. Slice of Life, Rom-comedy, etc. yeah. But not Shonen and Shujo. I guess my profile lists those I like a lot. The one thing I'd NEVER say to anybody except, perhaps, a friend who can take a joke.

Hmmmm. all that typing and I didn't say anything really. Oh well, I am a self-proclaimed idiot.

1: some humans are sticklers for labeling everything strictly by definition, and since RWBY isn't technically anime they think it lessens their otaku status to like a faux anime.

2: How can one's taste be sub par? See par is a golf term meaning the average, how can one's taste be below average? One would have have t watch the top 200 anime listed on MAL and score them all above the average users score to have above "par" taste. And to me that would mean you're watching for the wrong reasons.

You should just watch what you like. Don't let other people push you into thinking what you like/don't like is wrong. You're tendency to watch the big shonen shows does make you a more mainstream anime fan but mainstream doesn't mean subpar. It just means you tend to like what many other people tend to like.

Honestly, the shonen label always irritates me because it doesn't really mean aimed at teenage boys. It means everything that a teenage boy might be remotely interested in nevermind what the majority demographic that actually watches the show/reads the manga is.

The only issue I have with shonen is that there are a lot of people who seem to have the opinion that it's the only thing that matters or that it's somehow objectively superior to everything else out there (often because a shonen series is the first anime they watched). If you personally enjoy it then that's cool but try not to let it blind you to everything else the medium has to offer. If you do sample a variety of things but just tend to enjoy shonen series the most then I don't see any issue.
