Plot Summary

Year 526 of the Liturgical Calendar. The world knew that witches existed, and that they practiced the notorious art of sorcery. Nevertheless, the world did not know anything about the study of magic.

Our story follows a half-man, half-beast mercenary; humans mockingly call his kind the "fallen beasts." He always dreamt of becoming a human, but one day, he met a witch who would change his life forever.

"Do you desire a human form? Then be my escort, mercenary!"

The witch introduced herself as "Zero," and explained that she was searching for a one-of-a-kind magical tome that bandits had stolen from her lair. Entitled "The Book of Zero," the grimoire supposedly contained valuable magical knowledge that could be used to effortlessly bring the world to its knees.

Thus, in order to realize his dream of becoming a human, the mercenary must accompany Zero on her journey—despite her being one of the witches he so loathed.

This is the story of a haughty sorceress and a kindhearted beast.

Episode 1 is now up on Anime Strike.

Episode 1

So that tiger mercenary had a curse placed on him by a witch that turned him into the beast he is, and he happens to stumble across Zero while being pursued by Albus. Zero is after a grimoire that she wrote, and as such the two become partners, not through a blood contract but through a blood oath. Pretty interesting start here and at the moment it's mostly about establishing the partnership between the ones known only by the names Zero and Mercenary, all while that little boy is after the tiger for something.

Episode 1

Well this was interesting. Witches exists in this show as part of the story.

We got a non-human character as the male protagonist while Zero is introduced as well. Mercenary is quite a badass imo.

I thought Mercenary and Zero's meeting is hilarious.

Zero is a somewhat interesting character. She has a big appetite but at the same time, she can see through Mercenary's "human face", which kinda interesting as it shows that she has unique abilities as a witch. I think from here, they can develop their relationship further.

Overall, decent start.
I also kinda like Zero/Mercenary's character chemistry with the teasing coming from Zero.

The series is off to a good start so far as we are treated to the rift between the Kingdom of Wenias against witches and beast-fallen. Interesting bits to see Zero and Mercenary's character relationship grow from here

I've been looking forward to this one since it was announced. And I think it's starting pretty strong! It's definitely, for this episode at least, more on the Dialogue end in the Sliding Scale of Dialogue vs. Action. But I don't generally mind that as long as the dialogue is fun, interesting, or both. I think this one manages to sell it on fun. It's easy to see they were really just doing it to get the exposition out of the way.

Really enjoyed the two leads. The depth given to Mercenary was plenty interesting, especially given the setup of the world. And I'm sure it'll be explored further. Zero's gadfly nature is just too amusing to not adore, personally. Her teasing is a delightfully enjoyable aspect of her persona, and her overall chemistry with Mercenary. I am also interested in the emphasis this series seems to place on names. Don't know Mercenary's, and Zero's name is evidently not actually Zero. Interested to see where that goes.

Their initial meeting was funny too. Zero just being largely unfazed (immediately followed by her appetite), and Mercenary just Peacing Out the instant he finds out she's a witch, cutting her off in the middle of her dramatic introduction XD Good stuff. Hope it only gets better from there.

pretty underwhelming first episode. I was certainly looking forward to this series given the production company but the first episode was basically just a bunch of exposition. Hopefully, it is just the case that the exposition was just front loaded into the first episode and things start to take off.

I guess if the show ends up being bad then it will make it easier to ignore anime strike.

The writing is a bit handwavey, especially between why the witch wants to travel with the mercenary. But the character dynamic is cute. Furries aside, this series could be grrrreat!

Ep 1

I really liked this first episode. The setting is right up my alley, and I enjoy the differences between sorcery and magic. As others have mentioned, Zero and Mercenary already have great chemistry and I found both to be immediately likeable. I'm genuinely curious about both of their pasts. We got to see tiny flashbacks from Mercenary and it looks like he's been through a lot. Zero, too, is clearly someone of importance. Oh, and the ED was cute as hell. Great start, and I eagerly look forward to more.

I really enjoyed this one. Reminded me a lot of Spice and Wolf, with it mainly being two characters just hanging out and chatting. It ended up being a lot more engaging than having nothing but action all the time, imo. I hope that sort of atmosphere doesn't go away now that we have a team shota added into the mix.
