A gunman’s "relatively short" marriage and his alleged history of crime and drug use preceded Monday’s killing and suicide at a California grade school where three people died, according to police.

Cedric Anderson, of Riverside, California, walked into a special-needs classroom at North Park Elementary School in San Bernardino and opened fire on his estranged wife, Karen Elaine Smith, "without saying anything," before turning the gun himself, San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan said.
Anderson and Smith, both 53, were found dead in the classroom after the incident, which occurred at around 10:30 a.m. local time, Burguan said.
The shooter had a criminal history that included weapons charges, drug charges and accusations of domestic violence, Burguan said, without providing further details.

It was unclear whether domestic violence played a role in the shooting, police said, but the couple was estranged. Burguan said they separated about a month ago after being married for just a few months

The kids were trying to hide behind their teacher. So, that's how they got caught up in it.

I wonder how long they had been dating before getting married? I mean, you'd think that after a decent period of time dating, that you'd know enough not to get hitched, and to break off the relationship...

Do you honestly think you are helping? You attack me and runec for dividing people with our speech while speaking in quite possibly the most rude and obnoxious way possible. Do you think this is bringing people together? How does your "sigh" fit into that picture? How is that different from your garden variety snark?

As redo, ask me, ask runec, ask the bystanders like Meyer, Octo and Meyer, ask any of the people you have interacted with over the last couple days how much you really helped make these forums a better place. You are no better than the people you are criticizing.

I'll quote you here:

"You're free to be unpleasant and disdainful on the forums; there aren't any rules against that. But there are too many people who act like you in the world already, and you're making it a worse place. Disdain isn't going to convince anyone of anything, so I can only think that you are not actually trying to convince anyone [...]. Perhaps there's more, but that's what it looks like to me - and what the disinterested observer is going to see. And if you do in fact think what you're doing is going to convince people, you're at cross-purposes with yourself. (Which is a thing that happens; humans aren't coherent beings.) Your unpleasantness puts your opinions in a bad light, so that you're not helping the cause you're espousing by being unpleasant. And sometimes that cause is both (i) important, and (ii) my cause as well."

Sorry for bringing this into another thread, but I felt it was worth mentioning.

Well, first of all, what part of what I said to redokami is wrong? Which part is not relevant to how people talk, or behave on the internet? Second, since when was it anyone else's cause to critique how arguments on social media go? Can't I just say I'm "chumming the waters"?
I would rather people talk about what I'm saying than, well, anything else - because then at least they wouldn't be exacerbating the divisions that are breaking society apart. When I said runec was making "it" a worse place, I meant the world, not the forums. If people here need to be made angry to realize they're being manipulated by social media and their behaviors are destructive, then that's worth it. I can't say I've heard anything that would give me reason to respect the opinions of any of the bystanders you mention.

I think your problem is as much with what I'm saying than how I'm saying it. It's not easy to convey the opinion, "You're all following a script the internet has given you, such that even your excuses for your behavior are scripted," without upsetting people. And I was harsh with you and runec because I don't think you would have understood how important this is otherwise.

But you're right in this instance. Ultimately I do want to convince you that you subscribe to a bad paradigm of social media argumentation, and that you don't realize how your behaviors are molded by news and social media; this is half of why I bother to say anything to begin with. And I let my response to redokami here be influenced by my frustration with you (though I've already called her out for this in the past, when she was claiming the story about the "river of blood" in Dhaka a while ago wasn't orientalist). Making you react doesn't do much if I can't also get you to absorb what I'm saying. And so I am sorry. I will say more in my next message to you - you did take time to respond to me.

It appears the guy was the estranged husband of the special needs teacher he targeted and killed, and his shots hit other students who were special needs, with one of them dying and the other in critical condition.
