Because it's not a news agency its a tabloid. Seriously, guys, one more time:

Hah you think there is a difference between the two still. Most of our news agencies are just large tabloids. See CNN.

Could've fooled me...

But yeah, hopefully Daily Mail goes the way of Gawker.

So what do you think of the news. Serves Daily Mail right, doesn't it?

I read the article. That was outright scandalous. How can a news agency keep calling itself that, if it knowingly publishes fake news? I guess it takes getting flat out caught and sued to hell and gone. Based on the wording, it looks like Daily Mail will survive the damages. Perhaps, though it will cause heads to roll, and a shift in behavior towards responsible news reporting.

You never know. They many learn their lesson.

The irony of all this for me is that the Daily Mail is a severely right leaning, conservative newspaper. I suspect that they probably believed what they were printing and the problem was more in the lack of fact checking because they believed it to be true.

"she obviously married for money so chances are she really has been paid for sex, plus we all know that all sex workers come from Eastern Europe, right? Send it to print we can find more sources later..." I imagine that's how the conversation went.

Unlikely. The UK gutter press has survived worse and will continue pedalling rotten tripe for many years to come. Even when one paper shut down after a scandal a few years ago (News of the World, a Sunday paper) its sister paper (The Sun, a week day paper) started publishing on Sunday as well to fill the void.

If sending journalists to jail for illegal reporting practices doesn't get them to stop, a settlement of a low value case (comparative to their earnings) will have no impact.
