All I can say is, maybe give Japan a little more time in regards to general cultural understanding of homosexuality.

Not to say that progress hasn't been made, but I wouldn't generally associate this country as the forefront of said movement...

This is the internet, and anime is popular among adolescence and beyond. Do you not think this is an overreaction to an expected phenomenon?

In which case, avoid General Discussion, and just talk in Anime Discussion, or Manga Discussion.

General is for topics such as Trump and Hillary and all that these days.

yes I agree, I definitely see it does in a lot of shows though like: Utena, from the new world, yuri on ice. So I think in someways it is advancing.

You have to press the actual word quite or if you press the checkbox then you need to click quote selected at the bottom of the page.

So.. How to say this.. Im gay, 23 years old, (though ppl think im straight, because I act straight it seems lol) , and ive been watcing anime for a while now, enduring fan service filled shows (even Highschool DxD). which I somehow endure just because I think it has a good story, music, characters etc. However theres something ive noticed in this medium which kinda makes me rethink what im doing.. Im going to talk about 2 things:

1- The community:
Now this doesnt apply to Everyone of course, but ive noticed that whenever a male homosexual character appears in an anime, such as Paranoia Agent ep 8, From the New World, or in Akame Ga Kill, the response (sometimes) is : eww that character is gay, or simply: gayyyyy. and i find that response So childish and offensive. you dont say that when its 2 girls do you??. at that moment when I read that I just think: hmm is this a really young child or a homophobic idiot? and its just kind of.. how to explain it..makes me not enjoy what im watching anymore, because If I cant feel accepted in what im seeing, whats the point in watching it? Now im thinking, what was the point in watching 200 episodes of Fairy Tail? What was the point in watching Gurren Laggan which had a horrible representation of a gay character?... Its as if a straight person was watching an anime purely about homosexual relationships and when a straight character appeared all the comments said: Ew a straight one, get rid of it its ruining the show! Ew a "breeder" (yes that word sounds horrible lol). So I ask of people who say things like (WHICH IVE SEEN ON CRUNCHYROLL FORUMS) "gay people should die" or " its an ilness" , to seriously rethink what they are saying and re evaluate themselves and the hate they have in them.

2- Gay representation in Anime:
Utena, From the New world, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Sakura Card captors, yuri kuma arashi, Yuri on Ice ( i think?) and more that im probably missing had great representations of gay characters, they just flowed with the story or were central to the story, I mean the director for utena and yuri kuma is gay himself, and i wish we saw more of that.. However it just maddens me how in most mainstream anime, a gay character usually falls under the stereotype of a really feminine or weird acting character. (Theres nothing wrong with being a feminine gay person, im just saying when thats all they represent) I myself am a mixture of feminine acting and male, thats why in my life, both straight and gay men and women usually find me attractive haha, but anwyay as I was saying, the representation is just limited to one OVERexagerated stereotype like in Gurren Laggan. Which sucks because I Loved that show. Do you see what I mean?

Closing comments:
I just want to be proven that there are still people with a brain and a heart.. people who even if they are straight, Dont care if there is a homosexual characer or relantionship in their show, like most of my friends. Are there any other gay, lesbian. trans, etc, people who feel how I do? or do you not mind about how most of the community reacts? Because I sincerely like to feel part of a show when im watching it, not a stranger to it . And honestly at this point i hate to admit it but I might quit watching it.. which sucks because ive loved anime for so long, but the sexist mysoginistic and homophobic trends I keep seing are keeping me from it. I Hope someone proves me wrong, because I dont want to leave the medium like this.. xx

Also question what's wrong with someone going "gayyyyyy" if it's playful? nothing is wrong with it.

No offense to you or any other homosexuals but I don't see homosexuality as normal (and most likely never will) and there are a lot of countries that also see it that way and will treat it as such. I hate my country because they keep pandering and adding gay themes in almost everything now (e.g. soaps like Eastenders, Emmerdale, etc) and I can't stand it. People's sexuality should be kept to themselves and not shoved in our faces as if it's the norm.

LMAO. If you're surprised that someone's sexuality and who they date is brought up in a soap opera then I think it's you who needs to learn to shrug things off.

Not surprising at all. UK is always pandering to SJW nonsense and what not. I don't particularly care what someone's sexuality is so long as they don't shove it in my face.

This.

First of all, there is no such thing as a good soap opera. They do not work like normal shows, instead trying to confuse the audience into watch a series of riveting yet convoluted series of events that ends in a character being gone, a fire, etc, versus an actual resolution. Their purpose is to be on the air as long as possible. For a mini arching series, this proves extremely difficult, and often results in a lot of bullshit that I understand less than Engineering Statics.

The gay card is a pretty common trope to pull, if not for a little forced drama or anything, in series that generally cater to women.

I think i finally got this quoting thing right lol ok, hmm I guess it can be playful, I mean then it would be okay for me to say Straiiiiiiiight. then we are good. Depends on the context, if you dont mean it in a Super offensive way then i guess its fine. Even though it would be better not to say it as an offence (offense or offence?)

If your definition of "shoving it in my face" is acknowledging it, like just about any person does with anything then you just shoved your heterosexuality in all our faces a minute ago. Of course I'm sure your response would be something detailing how it's okay for you to do it but when a gay person does it it's "SJW nonsense".

fair enough but honestly if your going to take someone using the word Gay offensively as hurtful your going to have a bad time as Gay is informal for stupid in the oxford dictionairy and most people do use it informally that way (mostly not even refering to homosexual people)

If a single word is offending you that much i say avoid society to be honest...heck i'm bi and i have no problem with someone using the word Gay as offensive slang neither do alot of my Gay friends thing you need to know is not everyone will see things the way you see them or accept them as such.

what you find offensive others will find normal and ok.

I don't really understand why the community is something that makes you consider quitting anime, seeing as how the community is something that can be completely ignored. I mean, why do you care what people say about something you watch, especially when it's people you're more than likely never going to meet face to face? If I let negative comments about various anime hinder my enjoyment, I'd probably never watch anime again, because someone is always going to have something negative to say about a show you enjoy watching. Just watch the show you enjoy and ignore the comments.

I think a better example to support his claim Is Star Trek movie Hikari Sulu. I have to wonder, "why"?

I mean, Spock was written without much faithfulness, but his sudden homosexuality did not have that much point to it, and not only that, he was not canonically gay in the original series, and something George Takei spoke against when asking them to respect Roddenberry's creation.

I had a friend who used to use the word Gayy for things. I just dont quite understand it. Just how other people might find another word offensive I do kind of find if offensive, for me its kinda just trivilazing who I am. Or making it seem gross or wrong.. I think the word Gay is meant to represent something beautiful.. and I thought in old English it meant happiness? Anyway you can use it all you want, I dont mind, me personally I only use it as a descriptor. So its fine to have differing opinions on that word. Maybe one day ill grow used to other ppl using it.
