I realize that some things just become tropes for which there is no rational reason, but I'm puzzled by the number of shows in which - for unexplained reasons - the cast presented in the opening credits seems to have been pushed out of an airplane without parachutes. I can sort of see it in action-oriented shows like Nanbaka but for slice-of-life like WWW.WAGNERIA!! it just seems to be an odd way of showing how the various characters would behave if ejected at 30,000 feet. Thoughts?

I'm pretty sure the point isn't to show how they'd react when falling from great heights. The only OP I can think of off the top of my head with falling is Charlotte and despite the disappointment of the show itself, the falling makes sense if you've watched the series. The point is more so to symbolize something that happens in the show. Whether or not that thing is literally falling from the sky is a different matter.
On the subject of falling in slice of life OPs, I can't think of any slice of life that I've watched with falling. Usually they make you know what you're in for like with Nichijou's comedy or School Live's... everything. Unless there's a gag with falling in the show idk how it'd make sense.

I was personally disappointed with the ending. Like everyone else I thought it was ridiculously rushed. I mean it took him how long to finish that job with things like
happening yet it's all finished in a single episode. If it was panned out I'd be less harsh but as it stands it was disappointing for me. Especially after episode 7 which was done very well. Overall the thing I hated the most was the amount of wasted potential. I could complain more but this isn't the thread for that type of thing and I've already created a pretty big brick of off topic text.

I haven't really noticed falling through sky as especially common. Now I'll be looking for it.

What I notice is that a lot of anime have a character, in profile, walking -- often retaining the same position on screen, as the scenery goes by or other background images happen. There are some variations on this -- sometimes it's multiple characters all in a line; sometimes there might be something a little interesting the character does at some point besides just walking.

ETA: Though, now that I think about it, I guess that happens more in EDs. All that I can clearly think of off-hand are endings.

Opens up and prepares the viewer for the idea of the extraordinary, ridiculous, or fun. Also sky backgrounds are much easier to draw for background artists.

Anime openings tend to be more symbolic/figurative than literal, so often, falling will have nothing to do with literally falling from the sky, but would reference something like a 'fall from grace' or 'descent into madness.' The first opening to comes to mind involving a fall is the first opening of Magi, where we see a scene of the character Judar falling from the sky. I think it is safe to say that this is most likely a reference to him being a Fallen Magi, a Magi who has fallen into depravity.

As for how it applies to WWW.Wagnaria, considering how much of a central theme 'love' is in the show (the show is practically "Couples Therapy the Animation," not to mention St. Valentine himself is a recurring character), then perhaps all the characters falling could be a reference to them all "falling in love" with each other? That's the only explanation I can think of off the top of my head.

This is kind of off topic, but you made me remember one of the greatest OP's I have ever seen (Magi's first OP). I completely forgot about all of Magi's OP. It's been a long time since I had watched that show. I went back to watch and remember them and I repeated all of them for an hour. Thank you for reminding me of them.

Well, I'm happy to help, even if unintentionally. I always liked the first OP, it has a nice catchy-ness to it. However, I've never been good at remembering any of the later ones.
