So with Shingeki no Kyojin season 2 finally arriving I was thinking back to those truly great anime of years gone by and found myself stuck on Shin Sekai Yori. I'm re-watching it now but I want something like it that's entirely new to me, not necessarily in a literal way, with powers and a quasi-feudal setting; but that same sense of a larger mystery.

Steins;Gate and most recently Erased gave me that same feeling but is there something else like those out there that I may not have seen that can take me back to that edge of my seat, always seeing something bigger over the horizon, feeling?

Ps. Minus 1000 points is you say Gosick, individual episodes were good but the broader arc was 100% apparent by episode 4.

I suppose you could say that Utawarerumono is very close in terms of story. The only thing is that Utawarerumono is technically a harem based on a H-game, and while certain aspects of that bleed through, a lot of the story focuses on the society and war themes. There is definitely mystery to it, although I guess I spoiled a bit of it since I said that it's very close in terms of story to Shin Sekai Yori.

On the one had this is Utawarerumono

On the other hand this is also Utawarerumono

Season 1 : https://www.funimation.com/shows/utawarerumono/
Season 2 : http://www.crunchyroll.com/utawarerumono-the-false-faces

Season 2 takes place ~15 years after the first Video Game. The anime version of season 1, leaves out one certain event that kind of causes a rift between it and season 2, but it's still like 95% relevant in terms of overall story.

Another anime that is good in terms of mystery, and feels a lot like Shin Sekai Yori, is Noien.

Think of Noien as sort of a cross between Shin Sekai Yori and Stein's;Gate. (Although actually it's closer to Bioshock Infinite than it is to Stein's;Gate.)

Yeah I watched the Utawarerumono's. I did like them but they weren't on the same level. I actually think I watched the first season before I watched Shin Sekai Yori, I think I didn't get around to it for like a year.

Noien I torrented years ago but couldn't get into then my hard drive crashed and I lost it. I'll put it back on my list.
