Watch the CR marathon on Twitch this week. The act of participating with friends might better than sitting and contemplating titles.

I would recommend RWBY because it's an American anime about transforming weapons and it started as an English speaking anime and you don't have a whole lot unusual stuff thrown at ur face like in most anime. You want to start them off slow and easy. RWBY has some dark themes in an anime that started free of cussing you don't know who cussing would offend either. What I also liked about the first season is that the episodes were short but each one was good in it's own way if you were new too RWBY I kept feeling like awe man it's already over? But it was just getting good!

Then I would recommend Sword Art Online because it's a fantasy/scify anime about virtual reality which we already have the tech for but in SAO the anime is way beyond us. With the full dive system that utilizes all of our human senses in a virtual world and the action is just plain awesome! When my friend watched the first episode he said I have goosebumps. Because the fight scenes were so epic.

I would always recommend Death Note.

But if someone isn't interested in anime, I don't pressure them.

I would also suggest something older, just to give some variety and so they don't become a new-styled purist
Personally recommend Trigun and Cowboy Beebop

At my age I tend to send people to Claymore, Plastic Memories, Berserk, Scums Wish and Prison School. If they're a lot younger Nozuki-kun, One Piece, Attack on Titan, Gintama, Re:Zero etc.

Heh, what does "a lot younger" mean? Here's your juice boxes and cookies, kids! Now let's watch what happens to Eren's mom! :D

(All seriousness, not a bad list.)

I've generally had pretty good results with Azumanga Daioh, Sailor Moon, and Hellsing Ultimate when this sort of situation comes up. Trigun and Desert Punk do pretty well, too.

The objectively best introductory anime would have to be Death Note. It's the most popular anime (according to MAL) of all time and as bonus points, it is also critically acclaimed. The advantage of being popular is the obvious association of being very enthralling. It's basically a guarantee they'll keep watching after just the first episode.
