This question came up one day while I was watching anime...
If the people in anime watch anime, then what is their definition of anime?
This is too much to wrap my head around, and I can't seem to express excactly what I think on this matter...
I hope at least someone else can...

I would say it's all anime. To me it doesn't matter where it's referenced or how (in real life, in a manga, or in an anime).

Same goes for manga. If they're reading manga in a manga, then it's manga.

A dream in a dream is still a dream.

Yeah, as they are supposed to be "real people" then it's just like you watching anime.

by the by, if a character in an idol series watch a "live performance" (example: Pripara episode 1), then that would be a live performance, not an anime. this is because in that case, the characters in the performance are "real" in the tv series - the characters in the series could - at least in principle - meet and greet with the characters performing.

Ooo how about this (wrong) idea? Anime characters only view those with more extreme eyes in their animes!

So, a "3" watching an anime would only have "4" and above in their anime shows:

I don't dare ask what a "9" sees when they watch anime.

What is a peasant to a king?
What is a king to a god?
What is a god to a non-believer?

I always think of it like, the anime characters we as a viewer are watching are supposed to be just like us, real people. So when they watch anime, it's no different in their world than it is in ours.

Anime is anime, even in anime.

What if our reality is but constructed events of fiction viewed from a higher being?

Congrats, you've discovered existentialism. lol

Reminds me of a discussion from earlier about how Spongebob Squarepants was capable of drinking a glass of water or using water while being completely submerged.
