Hey guys, so here's the thing. I started watching SAO when it first came out and was actually pretty disappointed *hides from all the tomatoes and banana peels*
I'm not hating on it at all, let me just briefly list the reasons why I didn't like it.

1) The first arc is chock-full of (what seems to me) unnecessary minor characters. Like 5 or 6 episodes are dedicated to characters that don't really matter? And then side quests that, again, don't really give anything to the story. Most events seem just a filler, with big events scattered here and there. It just doesn't feel like what we were promised: people trapped in a videogame and if you die there, your die IRL. To me it seems like a harem in fantasy land and oh yeah the most massive deus ex machina to close off the first arc.

2) Also, the time skips. I don't know why they bugged me so much, but I mean, they cleared floor one, cool. Next episode they're already on floor 20-something? And the MC had NOTHING to do with it? We don't even see any action on the floor-clearing front. It's just a whole bunch of unknown players clearing floors left and right and we're stuck with Kirito angst, when really he was supposed to be really badass right? Speaking of badass:

3) Asuna. At first I LOVED her character, she was strong, independent and just awesome in general. Then she meets Kirito again, and she literally gets demoted to waifu status...

4) I did not finish the second arc. Suddenly we have a "Thank you Mario, but our princess is in another castle" scenario. Again, as far as I got, we get MORE unnecessary characters and... an incest subplot? Because... why not?

That is when I gave up completely.

I'm really REALLY not trying to piss anyone off. I'm just genuinely puzzled that this show is so popular that we're still getting new content! So I just want to know if I gave up too soon, if it gets better, if I'm just missing the point entirely, or if this is how the show is, in which case it's probably not for me.

I genuinely open to all opinions

My short on-topic answer: I don't think you are missing out, and I think your assessment is reasonable. I found the first part of the first season moderately enjoyable. I also liked Asuna until she went all housewaifu. I didn't mind the time skips. I would have enjoyed things more with more Klein.

Second arc -- mostly horrible, with so few bits of anything worthwhile, my personal advice would be to stop right there and go no further.

I did not watch the second season, but it's possible that is still worth it for you to watch. I don't think finishing season one is a prerequisite, but I'll leave that persuasion or dissuasion to others.

My moderator answer: I've moved this over to the Advice, Info, Recommendations forum since you you seem to be looking for personal advice related to your watching of the show. There is an existing thread in the Anime forum that you might be interested in though. Here's the link: /forumtopic-987413/what-do-you-think-about-sao

SAO was a 100-200 episode anime crammed into a few episodes I fully agree

BUT its still fully worth watching the first season as its pretty much the foundation for that genra and many other anime make reference to it so you would miss out on jokes or context in other anime. Accel World being the biggest example of this.

Also its just a highly discussed anime

And honestly the big thing about SAO is the fantasies it gives you. The story mostly focuses on making the audience feel emersion in their own fantasy SAO.

SAO is an entertaining show, not a good one. That's my opinion on it.

Visually very appealing and the main character isn't (really) a dense wuss who doesn't stand up for what he believes in. Which is a good thing.

Other than that the anime has many many flaws, the second arc was.. well, egh.. The second season wasn't very promising either. It is once again pretty entertaining, but don't go in with any expectations.

SAO is overhyped and overhated. It's by all means just a mediocre show with a cool concept, which is probably why most people enjoy it.

1 and 2) The first arc is a mix of the introduction/prequel(?), the main story, and a lot of side stories in between that were only written after the story was done. Take away all the side stories and the arc would only be about half as long, so I can see why the studio decided to include the side stories and put them in chronological order, even though the final product was a mess. That's why there are so many time jumps that don't really connect and so many characters that have no importance to the main story. There's another light novel series called Sword Art Online: Progressive that shows what happened on every floor, although there's no telling how long it'll take to complete it...

3) Yeah Asuna is nothing more than trash-tier waifu for the majority of the series. The final arc in the anime (Mother's Rosario in season 2) does a better job at showcasing Asuna since Kirito is almost non-existent in that arc and it's also the best written story in the anime so far. I don't know about after that but I've heard from LN readers that the arc after that is also good.

4) The second arc is one of the weakest. Season 2 has Gun Gale Online, which starts off much better but goes downhill towards the end. In the middle is Caliber which gives the spotlight to everyone in Kirito's harem and Klein, but is the most boring arc (and thankfully the shortest). Then there's Mother's Rosario, which I already mentioned.

Also, don't worry about offending anyone. It's pretty common to think that SAO is overrated, which it is. I don't know if this was enough to convince you to continue. You're really not missing much other than a few good moments later on. Like Lorreen said, you don't need to force your way through the second arc to watch the rest. All you need to know is that Kirito succeeds (biggest shock of the century, I know) and also

Well Sword art online is one of my favorites but I agree with the time skipping. I was kind of lost when they did that because I wanted a great amount of detail on the levels and experiences they had in the game. Who wouldn't want good detail in this anime?! I guess they were in a time cramp and couldn't put all the detail into. Also I don't know much about the company but they probably had a strict budget and didn't want to go over it.

I'm really glad I'm not the only one who thinks this show is overhyped But I also agree that it's overhated, because I did enjoy some parts of the first arc. I think what I really wanted from this was something like Ready Player One so it kinda threw me off.
I don't think I will be reading the LNs though too much investment for a series I'm not that into

I never know where to post stuff thanks
Also, I agree with you on Klein. I think he was probably my favorite character and he had very little screen time and was always treated so badly by Kirito...

*facepalms @ the spoiler* Only in SAO would something like this happen I gave up asking too many questions in this anime though... I also never really understood the mechanics (or the necessity) for the whole Yui arc, so yeah :P

Thanks for all your replies! I'm pretty much convinced not to finish the second arc, but I might give other seasons a chance if I'm in the mood for something light and entertaining

I'm pretty much missing it because SAO is not available in Asia and I'm disappointed.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought this way too. OP at least tried to go further than I did with SAO. :p I gave up after 4 episdoes because I couldn't stand the time skips.
