One of the reasons why the economy in North Korea flourished in the 70s was because the USSR was serving as a market for inferior North Korean goods, but once the USSR stopped buying, it tanked, only to be intensified by famine around the same time.

The current relationship is a bit more complicated, but a great deal of the current deals are economical with a stringent regulation against militaristic applications to ballistic missiles, and among other deals which were strained with further nuclear testing, with sanctions supported by Russia.

It is unlikely they will provide any support if war does break out, nor does it seem that they will push North Korea to war.

*Missile may or may not get off launch pad. If missile is loaded with a nuke pray to Kim Jon Un for peace in the afterlife.

Why would Russia ally with Korea? Even China is sick of North Korea. No one likes North Korea.

This is the most accurate political cartoon ever.

The sad part is I saw a documentary on the place once and they brainwash their children to hate the US and make them think they can win.

So we basically have a country made up up two kinds of people. The smart ones who know their country is trash and have zero motivation to fight for it outside of not wanting to be executed and the brainwashed ones who live in a fantasy world.

Phalanx systems that can shoot down artillery have existed for over a decade. They had them dialed in and on point on my first tour in Iraq.

Artillery emplacements won't last more than a few hours against what we keep in store on Aircraft carriers.

I think everything's going to be fine for everyone except N Korea

The only way NK would conceivably be part of setting off WWIII is if Trumpkins does something egregiously stupid with China and/or Russia while waving his dick around over NK, Syria, and/or Iran.

Russia is on the verge of attacking America after the whole Syria thing though if you don't remember.

...assuming that they a) have actually gotten their missiles to function properly- which they have not, and b) have actually gotten their nuclear warheads to function properly- which they have not, and c) have actually miniaturized their nuclear warheads sufficiently to *mount* them on their missiles. They have accomplished none of those things.

I've participated in high-level joint combined wargames in Korea. The ROK alone would curbstomp the DPRK. They don't really even need US assistance to do it. The DPRK is a paper tiger equipped with laughably outdated equipment in most important categories, and hasn't got sufficient fuel or logistical capability to maintain operations more than a few days.

It would suck for the residents of Seoul, though; at best they would suffer a massive and prolonged high explosive bombardment; at worst chemical and biological attack.

No it's not you paranoid sensationalist. The DPRK has next to no war making capability and basically everyone with a brain knows it'll be like a whole 5 minute war.

Not exactly. The ROK and US could reach the decisive point within a few days by destroying key logistical nodes and key capabilities (airfields and long range artillery mostly), but given how much of the DPRK military is dispersed into roundabout a hundred divisions (!!!) of fanatical infantry (about 5 times the manpower size of the US Army), it would take months to finally end the fighting.

Phalanx (I assume you actually mean C-RAM) would be of exactly zero use against a nuclear armed ballistic missile, as the height-of-burst for most nuclear warheads is between 3000 and 7000 feet, above (or at least at the extreme far end of) the effective engagement range of the C-RAM system. A ballistic missile also comes in at a higher velocity than C-RAM is optimized for. It engages mortar and artillery shells, which travel in the realm of 300-800 meters per second. A ballistic missile in terminal phase comes in at roundabout 2000- 7800 meters per second. THAAD and PAC-3 missiles, however, are quite effective against ballistic targets, and even minor damage to a nuclear warhead will cause it to fail to detonate.

Against DPRK long range artillery, C-RAM would be equally useless. C-RAM is designed to engage single rounds in small volleys. Onesies and twosies. The kind of attack middle east terrorists launch from the bed of a bongo truck. DPRK LRA fire strikes, however, concentrate hundreds of tubes at max rate of fire onto select targets. It would easily overwhelm C-RAM's capability. Even a single conventional battery of 4-6 guns firing in coordination would overwhelm a C-RAM. Just can't shoot them down fast enough.

Still, as DPRK advances their missile and warhead programs, *eventually* it will hit a point where the most prudent course of action for the free world will be a pre-emptive strike to deny them ever developing the capability. The Kims are painting themselves into a corner.

Obviously, North Korea is only a threat in the sense that they could eventually produce competent scientists & engineers from working on their missile programs and share them with a country like China with a lot of resources and manufacturing.

The U.S. military has become experts at conventional war. Destroying an organized military has become an afterthought at this point. It's the nation-building they suck at.

Cause you Yanks spent all your time and money building an effective, hugely overpowered military that does it's job to the letter and quickly to boot. But didn't seem to see the need to do the same to your diplomatic core.

To get to OP's point though North Korea is a joke, a state propped up by the crumbs China throws at it. They won't get those crumbs if they seriously try anything resembling actual warfare. And if they do well the world will wipe North Korea off the map. The only real danger North Korea will possess is in the aftermath. North Korea post war will be the Middle East only a couple million times worse.
