My first attempt at watching it ended after 4 episodes. I liked it but wasn't in the mood for this kind of show at the time. I'm about done with 2005 anime and plan to finish the OVAs and the second season.

I'm not really talking about something with a similar plot or anything, I've watched over 100 anime and haven't come across anything like this.

What I mean is something that is very atmospheric, great story telling, and/or mature.

Mushi-shi does a better job of making me care about it's characters in 20 minutes than most anime do with multiple seasons.

Not supernatural like Mushi-shi, but if you have not already watched it, this has the above characteristics, a story where story-telling is the key plot point...

/showa-genroku-rakugo-shinju (two seasons, make sure to scroll down and start with the first one)

I was going to watch it but heard what it's about and decided not to. I'll give it a shot though, it seems to get a lot of praise.

Much sweeter than Mushi-shi, but with similar atmosphere is Natsume Yuujinchou. Some actually got me into Mushi-shi by comparing it to Natsume.

Luckily for you, it's got a bajillion seasons lol

I was recommended this a few times when I posted a similar thread on another forum. I didn't realize how long it was until your comment.
I'm planning on watching it, sometime soon after Mushi-shi.

I know, I appreciate the clarification though. I'll look into it, all I know about it is the interesting art style.
