I think it's just a marketing gimmick by this point. Sure, a couple of decades ago, that meant something. Nowadays, appliances are, for the most part energy efficient by default, because energy efficiency is a huge selling point. I don't think, that just because the government stops regulating energy efficiency that it's going to go away. GE, Westinghouse, LG, etc, all want to keep making energy efficient appliances because energy efficiency is a highly sought after feature.

Energy Star certifications can be carried out by a third party private company, to maintain industry standards. Just the way that the UL (Underwriters Laboratory) is a private company that tests appliances for safety. Companies like GE, Westinghouse, LG, Samsung, etc, pay UL to test their products for safety.

I don't buy anything that hasn't been tested by the UL. So, even if the government drops the Energy Star program, because it's such an important feature for consumers when they choose appliances, that I can see a company setting up to test products for energy efficiency, and they'll get paid to test those products by the companies that make those products.

That means that fewer tax payer dollars will go towards a government program, because it's being paid for by corporations (who, of course pass on the costs to consumers who buy the products - but people who don't buy the products aren't paying the tax. See?).

If only the government would end all its social programs and allow civilization to take over in the private sector.

crap! and here i was waiting for the first Energy Star Certified range/stove !! at least i can talk about it vs the neighbor gas range !!

gas range vs electric range !

modem electronics and appliances are more efficient today than they are 4-5+ years ago.. without regulations there will be little or no changes made

i got a flyer about this lately so i borrow one from a local library..
