I feel as though this is a question better suited for the creator of the series. Forgive me if this is a stupid question.

I have some questions that I want to ask pertaining to Gintama.

When the Amanto went to the planet earth and they landed on Japan, did they land in any other countries beside Japan?

I always wondered about this one so much.

What are your thoughts?

Probably not.

I don't know Gintama, though. Example just says it's set there, doesn't really say whether or not the trope applies. You might want to edit that if it does.

It is not pertinent. The Amanto basically hinge on Perry forcing open Japan with his "Black Ships", so you could say the Amanto are the rest of the world.

Yeah, as gornotck points out Gintama is loosely based on Commodore Perry's black ships of 1853/1854.

The Shinsengumi were a real police force, and Kondo, Hijikata and Okita were real figures in history.

I'd love to know the truth though, as Westerners tend to whitewash the whole black ships affair, when it seems to have been pretty much an invasion.

I haven't seen a single Western account of it, and I have never heard it told like that.

Isolation is a pretty extreme thing. It always seems to me - again, just from Japanese sources - that neither side was really right or wrong. The Tokugawa government was pretty totalitarian, and the romanticized image of the Shinsengumi that you see in anime... isn't entirely accurate. They were pretty ruthless.

This might be a dumb question: Before the Amanto landed it looked like Feudal Japan. So is this taking place in the past where everyone adapted to space age technology?
