- Slice of life comedy with dragons
- Likable characters
- KyoAni
- Kanna has reached meme status
- Subtle themes of fitting into society and exploration of unconventional relationships
- Dragon x human yuri
- All the female dragons are thicc

Do any of these sound like plausible reasons?

I watched it all and I don't see the hype. It was actually pretty basic and cringe at times. It had a couple of good episodes though.

All of this just about. Though im not a 'thicc' fan. How the characters intereacted with eachother seemd so plausible for a slice of life with dragons and magic. It honestly just stuck with some people, struck a cord with there emotions, feelings, and sensabilitys.

Was a show that after a long day of work/school when you watch it made you feel GOOD.

The show is funny, but I dropped it because I don't like shoujo-ai or yuri kind of thing.

Well the concept was perfect for the making of memes. And for many other reasons that people have already stated, but aside from that, I don't think this show is special at all, I was very tempted to drop it multiple times because I found it boring, but then a good episode would make me change my mind. To me it was very hit or miss, and even though I watched it all the way through, I'll never watch it again, it just wasn't that good to me. It got way more popular than expected, I honestly thought Interviews with Monster Girls did everything that Dragon Maid did but way better.

I dropped it, the episode I watched were okay. I just didn't like the episode where they made the only male dragon look like a fool (the one with the play I think)

Why are any CGDCT shows popular? That answer is the same to your question.

What I think helped the series was the characters having realistic motivations, as much as possible. Miss Kobayashi was a sad, lonely, miserable drunk who hated her job & was wasting her life away. Tohru is a refugee from her own world, due to her desire to escape the violence & hatred she lives with day in & day out. Kanna was an exile who is basically a child & was essentially sentenced to death until she was taken in by Miss Kobayashi & Tohru. Those three formed the heart of the series, while the other humans & dragons were the comic relief.
