WOW its been a LONG time since I've posted in the forums....anyways, I'm planning on going to an anime con coming up as Heine Wittgenstein from this season's "The Royal Tutor" and I plan on making his coat/jacket and hat from scratch, but I'm still technically an amateur when it comes to sewing lol

I've made a few costumes in the past but this would be my first attempt at actually making something from square one, so I was hoping for any advice as far as fabric material recommendations and any tutorial advice as to how I'd go about actually making the coat/jacket. I've been researching when I can, but any additional advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

Ah, that looks like a fun one. Since you're working from scratch, I'd suggest checking Simplicity patterns in the Halloween department - several of those should give you a good starting point for the overall coat and such, like a "vampire hunter" or something should get you pretty close. Definitely get a bolt of muslin to start - it's super cheap, so you can make pattern adjustments, then take it back apart and trace it for your final pattern.

Not sure when you're planning on wearing this, but a heavier fabric will probably hang better - a gabardine or something similar is popular for coats. I made a hooded cloak from that a few years ago, and it's heavy, nice and warm, but looked spot on.
