Well who would have thunk it. The HUGE crowd that showed up to listen to the speakers just listened to the speakers then went home when Anti-Fa never attacked. Also thanks to /pol/ for threatening to tell Anti-Fa's parents about their rioting.

Pretty sizeable crowd is starting to gather at the free speech site. Gavin McInnes Based Stickman Lauren Southern and Britt Pettibone all promised to show up to this event and possibly speak. A helicopter is flying overhead. No antifa yet.

A journalist is reporting some antifa preparation, but looks like they are still not on the scene. Update: reports of a group of 70 antifa preparing to march "within minutes" https://twitter.com/JackPosobiec/status/857680449728020480 Reports: Police arresting/threatening to arrest those who don't take off their masks disrupting the antifa MO.

Lauren Southern just showed up. Reports : "Antifa are scouting the area at Berkeley at the outskirts of the rally now Antifa "lying in wait to arrive exactly at 2pm PST". /pol/ sign in the crowd watchful eye

First speech is starting at the free speech rally, bakedalaska is speaking. A lot of Trump supporters are present. Several people are speaking uninterrupted by antifa. Lauren Southern is giving a speech "antifa are the ones that will get tired first" "they can't stop an idea, they can't stop free speech". Several more speakers after Lauren, one of them condemning antifa as "domestic terrorists". Brittany Pettibone talks about preventing antifa from declaring victory in being able to disrupt free speech

Based Stickman giving a speech :

"We are free man and women here" "The constitution is the law of the land, NOT the communist manifesto"

Oathkeepers president speaking:

"If the police stands down we stand up" .. "we are keeping everyone safe" .. "not a hair on any of the speakers were harmed"

police presence seems increasing. Riot police seen in full gear.

Objects being thrown someone is getting arrested.

Things are dying down, looks like the large presence of Trump supporters scared off the antifa from the type of action they were previously known for. The police presence was also much more visible.

Maybe Antifa finally learned it's better to let idiots speak and prove they're idiots. Like Milo.

I cannot imagine it. Idiocy in groups are amazingly stubborn. Though perhaps the police presences made a difference.

You just can't accept that people have differing opinions than you...

Free Speech is important as it pits two opinions against one another and the superior one comes out on top.

Do you seriously see discourse as some sort of boxing match?

A verbal boxing match where two sides try to prove their belief is correct through discussion. If you are right then people will naturally gravitate to you.

It does seem perturbing when one sides refuses to acknowledge the other as equally valid, or even refusing to change their opinion in lieu of converting it on others.

The main point of discussion is not to win, but better yourself in both your logic by considering others opinions different from your own. To assume one is the smartest person in the room is to close yourself to the bigger world, so I agree with your general conclusion.

Discourse is not something you can win with enough members, or something you can win in the first place.

I feel a bit disturbed when people mention /pol/ as if they are more than just internet vigilantes.

Even in the face of overwhelming logic, people will flock to the side they agree upon, something that happens with all manners of political discussion, which is shorthand for controversy.

People are hardly if ever logical enough to consider logic, especially when the usual intent is to humiliate an opponent on an internet forum. Merely butting heads is hardly effective, though perhaps convincing an opponent to abide by one's reasoning could be more effective in the long run.

In any case, when, or rather, why should rationality be dictated by popularity?

At one point I was a liberal trying to prove conservatives wrong. They stomped me with evidence and I started reading their evidence. As I read their evidence I slowly got red pilled. Eventually I became a moderate then a libertarian-conservative. Debating is the best way to figure out if your beliefs can hold water or not.

We all want to win and many times it takes a long time before someone is willing to change their beliefs. When I found my only retort to be a personal attack on an intelligent discussion I had to rethink my beliefs.

Their plan was to figure out who the masked attackers were and report their behavior to their parents, no joke. They are definitely internet vigilantes but they have a significant amount of influence.
