I would choose the Civic.

cobalt or focus are a bit too unreliable, as is the rabbit.

I've test driven the Honda Civic, Mazda 3, and VW Rabbit.

I'd definitely go with Honda Civic and Mazda 3 (being the Mazda 3 owner I am, haha).
As for VW Rabbit... I like that too. Good handling and more comfort.. better interior design.
However, with VWs... if you want to add options and mod anything, that will be pricey.

I think your best choices would be the Honda Civic or the Mazda 3 then. You could always search online for customer reviews, although maybe you should test drive them to experience it first hand. Also since I noticed you live in MI, you should see which one handles better in the snow.

Right, also forgot to mention that Japanese parts are cheaper than European... so if you ever need repair work on your car, it's better to go with Japanese or domestic.

/rather get a nicer used car for that price

I'll take the Mazda from the given cars, I've heard nice things for the loaded and higher up models, not really sure about the lower ones

^the Suzuki SX4 crossover is perfect for your needs. It's sporty(and fun), SHOULDN'T feel too cheap, and most definitely gets good gas milage. Also, it's the base for Suzuki's WRC car, in addition, it comes with AWD. And if you REALLY want to have fun, you're lucky, there's actually a manual transmission standard...

I also would buy a good used car for that price. Can you say something along the lines of a 2005 Nissan Altima or 2004 Saab 9-3?

If you pay an extra $2000 you could get an Imprezza, which has AWD. But I would go for a Corolla over a Civic, especially since corollas last a lot longer, and the 09 corolla comes out this month so dealers will be making deals just to get rid of the decent 08s which arnt much different from the brand new 09s.

More of my two cents. Look at the Hyundia Elantra. They are surprisingly large inside, well thought out, quiet and well made.
