Nope I have normal straight long hair. No shaved sides, or weird bangs, or dye, or anything. I don't typically wear makeup and I don't have facial piercings or tattoos either. I could definitely see them being rude to clerks just because of age though.

Yeah jealous of youth. Especially if you're clean cut like that(by that i mean what other reason?) Old ladies hating the pretty young women and grumpy old men i guess?

Primarily because everyone treats them like idiots. Ever since my hair started going grey, more and more people treat me like some kind of doddering moron. And if I spend more than a couple hours out in public dealing with a bunch of smug, smirking teenagers who think asking "where are the copper elbow joints?" is evidence that I can't think clearly, I start wanting to smack the shit out of people.

That makes sense. I also would be grumpy if I always had to deal with condescending brats every time I went out in public.

I'm guessing it has nothing to do with bitterness or jealousy toward youth, but how customer service is provided. To have a business offer "quicker" and "easier" service as a sales tactic, and then expect customers to forego that better service for the next customer in line doesn't compute to many older folk. The systematic failure of misleading conveniences is what's rude. (This was a common argument from my grandfather.)

Well, I suggest you to ignore them and don't let them get in your head, because you just can't pretend that everyone is going to be nice, some people are just assholes.

I work part-time in retail and I've noticed that most of the rude customers we get are in the 50-70 age range. Is there a reason why so many rude customers are baby boomers?

Obviously, I'm not saying all baby boomers are rude. However, where I work, they make up the majority of the customers who like to bully the smallest and/or youngest clerks and the ones who abuse the "customer is always right" rule in a dishonest way.

Why are so many rude customers baby boomers? Is it the same where you guys work or is it different?

I wouldn't conclude that being a "baby boomer" is the reason, so much as it is brain changes as you age.

I don't have time to find all the science stuff, so I'm just going to link this bit from 2005:

I worked for OnStar and the call center I worked at noticed a similar trend. To the point they started giving out training to help their staff deal with it.

Now before I continue I want to say I am not racist or sexist.

But if we got a call from South Carolina and it was a woman with a black accent. 95% of the time you were about to be yelled at REALLY harshly. Their husbands/boy friends were always super polite appologizing for their woman and they never had the same thick accent. You could get guys calling in with a black accent and they would be nice. Women without the accent were nice... It was just that large group of accented women and you would see girls working in tears daily 90% of the time it was cause of one of these women...

I have nothing againt black women and im sure there are prolly some nice accented black women in south carolina... just sadly the vast magority we dealt with were mean.

I use to work in retail it was a combination of both old and young so it varied.
you mentioned retail i know returns where always rough many would complain etc.

so it go's both ways you get the older complaining or the younger with no respect!
how many times i lost count of clerks calling me babe or honey? In customer service
you should use thank you mrs.or sir. Example walks in to clothing never gets told thank you
makes you feel welcome right. helpful- etc. but more today clerks on their cell phones ignoring customers!

I am not saying you do this, just what i have seen when i go out shopping if they do not appreciate my business
i will shop elsewhere.
looks like this generation from my perspective needs to work on manners some do anyway
it all boils down to kids learning respect and manners, it will get you farther in respect.
