With offline viewing, Amazon and Netflix are starting to focus heavily on anime and its audience. Whether or not Crunchyroll begins to offer offline viewing in the coming months is yet to be seen. Polygon has reached out to Crunchyroll for comment.

Update: A Crunchyroll representative told Polygon it plans to bring offline streaming to its service sometime in 2017.

““Our breadth of titles and relationships within the anime industry can’t be beat,” the rep said. “We know offline streaming is important to our viewers, and we're working to bring this feature to the platform in 2017 so that fans can keep up with their favorite shows wherever they are.

So this could be a rather interesting development for CR if implemented.

It is impossible for me to keep up with buzzspeak, or apparently to POST TO THIS THREAD, but this means that we'd be able to "download" episodes instead of having to buffer them? That could be useful.

Personally not fond of netflix binge strategy which was partially a reason for cancelling my subscription, they have no problem simulcasting Anime shows in Japan and they even seem to simulcast some other shows like "The 100". Amazon really needs to step up their game on keeping their simulcasts up to date and offering their licensed anime shows on their other service regions as fast like US.

Offline viewing will surely be a welcome feature for Crunchyroll users so we can watch shows on the go without massacring our mobile internet connection.

Same as what Gonikku said, I hope they add it in the right way. I hope there's no restriction of how many you can have to watch for offline. I'd like to download an entire season and slowly watch it.

Can someone please be kind to explain to me why is this important?, because wherever I go I have internet, so I don't really understand.

Instead I prefer that most the money goes to new anime licenses.

Please don't kick my butt for asking.

The feature is a useful one specially if you want to watch shows in places with no internet access but it seems Crunchyroll will implement the feature in response to Netflix and Amazon. Its those companies pushing for this feature in order to court anime fans, Crunchyroll just wants to add the feature to remain competitive in a level playing ground.

my guess is that, much like manga shop, you'll be able to purchase a select number of anime series, and once you buy them, you'll be able to download them to your CR app to watch offline (though only through your CR app). the offline feature will not be included as a premium offering - you'll need to buy each individual series to watch them offline. this could work, depending on how much they plan to charge per series.

This sounds quite interesting. Just another reason to be on Crunchyroll!

Thought i'll admit there a few title I know they will never get psyical releases so albe to download them and maybe watch them on another device would be nice.

know what you mean, there's nothing better than being able to look at a physical collection, but sometimes you have to download.

offline viewing is an incredibly useful feature, but there are still many ways that CR can screw this up
