For those of you who've read/or watched Tokyo Ghoul, you're probably already aware of the central moral dilemma that's at the center of the 'verse. That because ghouls feed on human flesh, and thus co-existence between the two species is by-and-large impossible. I'd like to hear all of your thoughts on the matter.

In addition, if you believe that co-existence is possible, do you have any ideas regarding how to turn it from a theoretical ideal to a practical solution? How would you go about trying to make co-existence possible?

Regarding the latter, I have two ideas.

- First, the dissemination of information that will reduce victims. For those of you who haven't read the novels (or read the tvtropes page like I did) there's a ghoul character who, through the use of various cooking tricks, is both able to disguise his true nature and significantly stretch his food supply by cooking human meat into various dishes. It occurs to me that if this information was spread to ghouls on a large scale, it would not only give said ghouls a couple of logistical advantages, but also reduce the number of humans ghouls have to kill in order to eat. It's not a solution by itself obviously, but it could make implementing other solutions easier.

- This would probably be a harder sell, but it seems to me that the simplest solution would be to do away with existing burial practices and simply give the flesh of the dead to the ghouls. I imagine a lot of people would be up in arms about it, particularly religious groups, and would probably be very difficult to implement. However, if it meant that ghouls didn't have to kill people to eat, it could very well be worth it. Alternatively, it could be done on a volunteer-only basis, sort of like how organ donations are already done in real life. I imagine a similar system could possibly further reduce the number of casualties required for ghouls to eat.

if a ghoul needs to consume human flesh to survive (a contradiction, since ghouls are by definition undead, but i'm guessing the anime series treats them as 'living' beings?), that implies they need proteins and nutrients that can be obtained through consumption of human flesh. there's nothing exceptional about the human body nutrition-wise, and they can probably get the same nutrients from other living beings. insects are known for being high in calory and protein density. since ghouls choose to hunt humans, there's an implication that they strongly favor "human taste". it's entirely possible to engineer a "human taste" flavor and make the insects taste somewhat close to human flesh.

tl;dr give ghouls human-flesh-flavored insects

My memory might be a little rusty on the matter, but I believe the reason why ghouls primarily feed on humans is because, within the world of Tokyo Ghoul, there is a type of cell known as the Red Child cell (RC cell for short). These cells are found only within ghouls in high levels and within humans at lower levels. The RC cells are what give the ghouls superhuman strength, extreme healing abilities, and composes the natural claw-like appendage called the kagune. As such, the only type of way they can possibly take in nutrition is by eating humans or cannibalizing other ghouls, the latter of which is extremely dangerous for obvious reasons.

Back on topic, it seems nearly impossible for ghouls and humans to coexist. Even if there were a way of producing a type of food rich in RC cells, it would be very unlikely that the peace could be maintained without giving rise to some totalitarian state that would still lead to ghouls being treated as second class citizens that face a great deal of discrimination. There is no shortage of ghouls that take pleasure in hunting humans, as such, they would organize and fight to preserve their way of life.

Only very very small group of ghouls live lifes that are not threats to humans eating dead corpses etc. Most enjoy hunting and torturing humans for food and most have no sense what they are doing is wrong. It is not like they are wolves that can eat any type of meat they can only survive eating humans or other ghouls. They are a direct threat to the survival of the human race. If they ever had the ability to became a large population they could enslave mankind and make us cattle. They are starting to be able to do this by making half human/ghoul hybrids forcefully. Mankind has never faced a species capable of threatening us as a species like ghouls. The only logical path is for the world to organize and exterminate the ghouls. It is no their fault they are born ghouls but that does not excuse the threat they pose to humans. I never understood why this was not a military matter. They kill hundreds of thousand of civilians every year and yet no one seems worried or even cares. Ghouls are the essence of an evil creation with the sole purpose of killing humans for food.
