I've noticed that there's a big trend of Cowboys, Samurai, Cyborgs, and Wizards being used in fictional settings. I find the ways that these archetypes are used in fiction to be very interesting.

So, what is your favorite out of Cowboys, Samurai, Cyborgs, and Wizards? And how would you rank the 4 if you could, from best to worst?

For me, I think I would do

Samurai

Bounty Hunters

Cyborgs

Cowboys

Wizards

I think my favorite would be Samurai. The reason for this is that while I have not seen a lot of entertainment revolving around Samurai, a common theme in Samurai characters is that during battles their sword is really just an extension of their will, making a lot of fights inherently character driven and personal. I also think Samurai shows, movies, and anime require much more in terms of quality directing and fight choreography, which means that while a shitty samurai fight can be a huge let down, one with good directing and choreography will have even more tension than your average fight scene.

Bounty Hunters are second because it's just so ...awesome. Originally this poll was just going to have Cowboys, Wizards, Cyborgs and Samurai without Bounty Hunters. And I was just gonna include Bounty Hunters as Cowboys. But Bounty Hunters are just so much fucking cooler than Cowboys that that wouldn't be fair to do. I'd end up giving Cowboys more love then they deserve. Bounty Hunters are just so cool. Jango Fett, Spike Speigel, Faye Valentine, Revy(I think she counts as a Bounty Hunter kind of?), just so many awesome characters. Especially Bounty Hunters in space, that idea is just so cool, roaming around in space setting out on your own adventures acting as a vigilante.

AND WHO CAN FORGOT THE SEXY, MAGICAL, SAMUS ARAN

Cyborgs are really cool because a lot of the best Cyborgs have story lines about humanity, trans-humanism and a lot of other intriguing ideas. It's also always cool to see the creative ways in which Hollywood or animators are able to make death scenes for them, seeing their robot guts spliced out and failing at the way side helpless because their very creation has stopped them from having a seamless death of dignity and brevity.

Cowboys are just ... eh. I mean it really depends on the story entirely but most westerns look boring.

Wizards are just so blegh. I mean the thing about wizards is the general idea is kind of cool with magic and everything, but every weapon type they use is just so dumb to look at. A "wand". A "staff". I mean like Harry Potter is fine and all but like just the idea of waving around some fiddle sticks is just such a funny idea. I think the idea of shooting magic is cool but it's also usually not as interesting as a close personal fight. I like wizards that use their hands for magic, or like laser swords, but so many wizards use wands or staffs. I don't hate wizards, they're cool. But as an archetype they are the most uninteresting I can think of out of these 5.

Cyborgs

For the self same reason the op rated them highly. The topic of trans humanism can spawn a story line far more intriguing then any of the other choices. After all what does it mean to be human in the end? Is the measure of a soul and mind limited to this crude flesh we occupy?
Most religions and philosophies speak against considering the body the sole measure of a person. But at the same time they speak against the improvement of the human body. This dichotomy is what I think makes a Cyborg a truly compelling topic for a anime, movie, or even t.v series.

Samurai

Samurai while they can be interesting really only achieve noteworthiness as Ronin. Examples include the 47 Ronin, Rurouni Kenshin , and the Seven Samurai ( who were actually Ronin despite the title) . In their current lifestyles they have to balance the Samurai code they once knew with the realities of life in Feudal Japan as a wandering warrior.

In this balance of Pragmatism and Honour is where the intrigue is found in this Genre.

I don't have much to say about the others, I personally think they've been over done.

Wizards, because you can always count on a good plot when they're involved.

The concept of a wizard is an ace thing.
The reality of the limitations of an author/creative being trying to flesh out such an erratic being as a wizard...is what really puts wizards last in many lists.
Many times, I've read the descriptions of a wizard and their capabilities in a game or story,
and while some of the descriptions may have excited me, almost all of the moments where they come into play
have had some form of a major letdown.

Now, if magic could be defined in a way that the observers can understand, interpret, and manipulate with confidence,
like how "Nen" was explained in Hunter X Hunter, I believe the fights would hold more sway than they currently do.

Otherwise, it feels like watching a battle between two senile senior citizens flipping through their book of spells while mindlessly waving their wands around in the air, rummaging both their erratic, empty minds and their text-heavy, 1pt font, single space books for a needle of a "sufficiently" powerful spell hidden inside of an ocean of spells the size of the universe.

To which end, I believe Ernesti Echevalier has come to disprove(with mechs! )! (although, at this point, he is more of a mech pilot than a wizard) But who cares! Magic-powered mechs ftw!

I chose cyborg. Here's why. Cyborgs while currently not real they could be.
No matter how you put it wizards will never be real.
Cowboys are cool in movies but in real life there just doods payed to protect cows from wolves and coyotes.
Samurai are awesome, and my second choice. The only, fault I can find is, they didn't make it into modern weapons before being destroyed by western civilization.
Bounty Hunters are cool in all, but there just criminals who help the police catch other criminals. Some times, the laws they break, are as bad as those, they apprehend.
