It seems Yusaku already had at least 2 Link monsters to begin with. Having Decode Talker fight Great Ogre several times felt repetitive but other than that it was good duel. Yusaku's combos and the way he uses his smaller monsters together to make plays reminds me of Yusei's dueling.

I'm surprised he's already going to figure out Blue Angel's identity this early according to the preview. I wonder how that's going to happen.

The 3d decode talker looked really odd fighting the 2d great ogre. I wish the link summoning animation were more hype like it was for previous new card types, the same frames of yusaku going through a hole in the sky into some other plane feels dull

Huh... I thought that this thread might be a bit livelier now that VRAINS is getting simulcast here at Crunchyroll but I guess not. A sign of the times I suppose, with more people using the mobile app and TV boxes to stream Crunchyroll there are just few people aware this place even has forum.

Anyway, I like the duel against Onizuka, it was a lot of fun to watch. I admit that I've never considered Yu-Gi-Oh! duels in terms of a wrestling match before. Yet I can't deny that the analogy makes a certain kind of sense; the kind of larger than life drama in a WWE ring, complete with heroes and villains, isn't so different to how the average episode of Yu-Gi-Oh! plays out.

I makes me wonder how Yu-Gi-Oh! could do as a real professional sport. Like a cross between pro video gaming and the grandstanding you'd see before a wrestling match. Of course, for that we'd need something like Kaiba's hologram systems or a comparable VR environment that can be streamed/broadcast to audiences across the world. I mean, thanks to all the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime the idea of monster themed card games as a massive spectacle is already part of the public consciousness.

We almost have the technology, with enough backing Yu-Gi-Oh!, which is already a cultural phenomenon, can achieve the same stature in real life that the anime already depicts.

Episode 6

So Aio and Akira aren't related by blood, this is more of Bakura / Rukia type of sibling relationship? So I assume Aio's older sister and Akira's wife is dead.

Don't let anyone find out you are Blue Angel, it is too late for that, Yusaku knows and found out very easily if I might add.

Poor Aio she is a loner in real life, and it seems everyone just uses her to get closer to Akira. At this rate it won't be long till she uncover Playmaker's true identity thanks to big mouth Ignis. Though speaking of which, I wonder in this duel will Yusaku reveal that he know Aio is Blue Angel. Considering what Akira said earlier, that could put her off her game.

And I am still not sure if the Knights of Hanoi are the true villains of the series, I am thinking SOL are the true villains of this.

I wonder if Naoki is going to learn Yuasku is Playmaker or anyone's secret identity for that matter till the end of the series, if at all? I know Aio and Go they are all going to know eventually, but I am not sure about Naoki.

That would make some sense... I was confused since they have the same last name, but I'm assuming Akira probably married into the Zaizen family (as opposed to his wife marrying into his family and her taking his last name).

I hope they explain a bit more later.

I was worried I wouldn't like Blue Angel very much since idol characters can get annoying very quickly, but she hasn't annoyed me yet. I do like that as Aoi she has a deeper backstory and isn't just happy-go-lucky all the time which is very common for that type of character in anime. She actually feels like a real person.

Wish we could get a bit more female characters though. Just one other girl in the club would have been nice.

Aoi and Akira are siblings-in-law. Didn't see that one coming. I'm curious about what happened to Akira's wife that caused him and Aoi to have to live together.

This duel will be interesting. Trickstars are an annoying deck to duel against.

No duel. Duel. No duel. Duel (2-parter though). No duel. Duel. Let's see how long this pattern continues.

I think this is definitely the most ambitious Yu-Gi-Oh! anime in years. Few 'battling' anime would ever take the time to devote so many episodes to world building alone. With that said, I'm glad VRAINS is going in this direction. The strength of Yu-Gi-Oh! has always been its character development; it's not just about the cards but the personally dynamic between each player in a duel, what they are fighting for and what they want to achieve in the end. All the world building of VRAINS so far is a good sign indeed, it makes every duel that much more important and impactful.

Episode 7

Wow Aoi is from the looks of it, is in a bad place. I wonder what was that in the end when she was crying, was inside her mind?

So Akira has more reason to have in for Yusaku, Playmaker is going to be blamed for this, when really it was the Hanoi Knight fault.

We also find out the nature of Akira and Aoi's relationship, so I am guessing they are step siblings, that is the indication I'm getting at least.

So next episode a cool down episode I guess, let's see what the Knights do next, Yusaku wants some revenge, while Akira wants revenge on Yusaku. I hope Aoi has a speedy recovery and not out of commission for too long.

Woow. This was an intense episode. Great duel and the animation seemed a bit better than usual.

This was a great episode. A fun and high stakes duel, in what is possibly the best animated episode of the season so far.

It's not entirely clear what Hanoi did to Aoi but it was definitely nasty. Since Hanoi are hackers I guess that the card they gave her contained hidden code, something to disrupt her VR system during the duel. Too crude for brainwashing but maybe something that messed with Aoi's brain function to heighten aggression?

Curious to see if Aoi will suffer any long-term effects after that incident, such as a permanent shift in her personality. Regardless, this reveals just how dangerous Hanoi really are - they don't just hack the VR environment, they can hack people as well.

I've been really surprised by this series, last episode was masterfully done, it was intense and tragic, I really hope they keep this trend of fleshing out the characters before dueling.

It'll be interesting to see how this duel with Playmaker chages Aoi and how long she will stay comatose.

Episode 8

Well I wonder how long till Akira finds out Yusaku is Playmaker. After the hospital time, only a mater of time till he puts two and two together.

So Ema is a super hacker, if she had goal beyond money, she could cause that damage, very OP.

So we have Yusaku vs Revolver already, this series is moving fast. And after Aoi is revived, I wonder how that will effect her character, as well as Yusaku and Akira's character.

When even Crunchyroll's translators can't stop thinking of Yusei when they see Yusaku:

I didn't think Revolver would show up in person and convince Akira to let Playmaker go. Now Akira has no choice but to put his sister's life in Playmaker's hands.

The titles for the next 5 episodes have been revealed and something really surprising caught my eye.

Revolver ain't messing around. I'm going to say it will be a very close match (maybe even a draw?)

Playmaker will need something really powerful to counterattack or hell, even to survive next time.

Episode 9

Yusaku and Revolver start their duel and they put on quite a show. All or nothing, too bad it is probably going to end in a draw.

Though looking at Yusku is going to lose, how is he going to get out of this one, will Ema get involved? How long will the duel last.

Next episode, the duel continues so I guess Yusaku survived.
