Think about it. Mecha shows involve humans going into big machines to battle it out, and attack on titan involves some humans going into big bodies to battle it out.

The show is not mecha, but the inspiration is somewhat there. War isn't that complex in anime anyway.

It does seem like it, except, you get eaten up if you don't have a "mecha".

Eren got inside of his Evangelion to fight against the Angels. If only Shinji was that eager...

That's an interesting idea! Its not that different from the setup of mobile suit gundam:

AoT:
Humanity is under attack by titans and have escaped to the 3 walls.
Gundam:
Earth's citizens are under attack by Zeon's new weapons, mobile suits, and a bunch of refugees end up escaping to the White Base.

AoT:
After ~100(maybe more? I can't remember) years of being safe in the walls, The main character and the place he lives is attack by the titans once again.
Gundam:
The story starts after 8 months of stalemate with Zeon. The main character and place where he lives is attacked by the Zakus.

AoT:
MC turns out to be a superior titan and the human military start to form their strategy around it.
Gundam:
MC turns out to have a superior mobile suit and the earth military starts to form their strategy around it.

Although, the titans themselves are more like a kaiju/ultraman genre thing. But kaiju and mecha can be seen in the same movies/shows so that's not that big of a difference.

That's a really interesting way of looking at it. I like that.

I like the idea of considering AoT inspired by mecha

It definitely has certain elements in common with giant mecha and I admit I got an Evangelion vibe from the Titan designs. (Probably because the EVAs are the most "human" mecha I can think of.)

Make some tweaks to the plot summary and you get: After a devastating attack on the Walled City Eren discovers a giant "mecha" that only responds to him and despite his lack of knowledge of "piloting" the "mecha" he manages to not only become a skilled "pilot" but defeats another "pilot" (Annie) with more experience, skill, and an arguably better "mecha".

Side note I still wonder about that flash of energy that appears to come from the sky whenever one of the human/titan hybrids transforms. I can't help but think the titans represent some technology gone horribly wrong and the energy needed to fuel the transformation is coming from satellites.

Interesting, it does have that mecha vibe in the sense that they kinda "pilot" the titans as vessels, but I think of it more as similar to the Kaijuu battles of Godzilla and Mothra and such. The motions are too organic and large to really remind me of mecha.

A lot of people say that AoT is inspired by FMA and NGE, which really makes sense

But I don't think that's enough to classify it "technically" as Mecha
