It's a "high school kids pilot robots" show. (Though I don't think there was an actual high school involved, they were just at that age...) To become a pilot requires having all your memories erased because reasons.

It's a space opera. An alien race is attacking the humans. The princess of that race has turned traitor and is helping the humans fight. She's also got some kinda history with the Main Character, but he doesn't remember because pilot amnesia because reasons.

There's a girl-crazy guy on the team, who hits on every cute girl he sees. There's also a guy-crazy girl on the team who hits on every cute guy she sees. Inexplicably, they never even once have the idea to hit on each other and save the rest of humanity a lot of grief.

A good ways through the show, they gain another member on the team. An androgynous-looking person with purple hair, who fulfills the role in the team best described as "unholy foaming rage monster". Also, this characters gender is never revealed in the whole show, but both Guy-crazy and Girl-crazy find them attractive when they're first introduced.

I also remember pretty hard that the last episode was kinda weird. The final battle was finished at the END of the final episode, meaning there was literally no more story after the enemy went down. Like, no epilogue, no tying up loose ends, no anything. Super Space Robot Punch connects, Bad Guy falls, credits roll.

I am fairly positive I watched it on Crunchyroll, but not absolutely certain. It could have been Netflix or Hulu or something.

Ah, yes, that's the one. Also, what the heck? There's a twenty-fifth episode I haven't seen... Is this an OVA? I can't see myself missing another episode when I was specifically feeling let-down by how the previous one ended...

Yes, it was a special thing to precede the movie. Crunchyroll added it back in October:

Ah. Well it's good that they're getting stuff like that. I remember finding out that it's REALLY hard for OVAs to get licensed over here for some reason or another. Any that DO make it over here is a good thing.

That being said... I watched that show so long ago, I have no idea what was going on now, and I don't wanna watch it all over again just to understand one new episode... but at the same time, that sudden ending is still getting to me...

The new episode follows a different team at the academy and does a recap of the end of the series from their perspective. The whole purpose of the episode is to remind viewers of the background to the series as an introduction to the movie (better for sales of movie tickets if the fans remember what the show is about).

You'll probably be disappointed if you watch all 24 of the earlier episodes only to watch a partial-recap episode as number 25.

Ah... good to know...

Does the movie at least tie up some loose ends?
