Their appearance, their background, their story, their situation, their personality, and what decision that make when they have to do something difficult for them.

Characters who aren't static and have contradictions. Through the course of a series, the characters will have gone through numerous events (some body or mind breaking, fatal, etc.). If the character's doesn't change through all that, then they won't feel organic to me; leading to loss of interest. I like it when characters have different faces. Depending on who they are conversing with, be it family, lover, friend, co-worker, stranger, or foe, they could either be loose/relaxed or stern/curt.

In terms of contradictions, I enjoy seeing characters who knowingly act in a matter that is in contrast to their beliefs or morals. The reason could be financial, social pressure, ancestry, political, etc. Seeing them reconcile their actions and beliefs greatly increases my investment in a character.

Characters who are realistic who have contradictions in their logic at times and are very silent and like to watch from the background.
People who i can relate to basically.

Judar is my favorite character for many reasons. It wasn't immediate, however, and what led to making him my favorite was this particular scene:

--because in that moment he can extremely relatable. I became obsessed with his character afterward. During that scene, while he stated he didn't care--it was evident to me he very much did. Despite this, he was aware that nothing about his life could change now--and thus it didn't matter. What mattered, instead, was enjoying the life he had now to the fullest of what it is.

That doesn't entail he isn't bitter for the people that made him this way--some amount of disdain for being the way he is.

Magi manga spoiler:

And this view I had of him was solidified in a more recent chapter:

Magi manga spoiler:

The way I lead my life is exactly the same. I may hold some bitterness, perhaps even contempt, towards my parents for my life turning out to be the way it is--and I may hold envy for all those people around me because I have autism...and yet all this doesn't matter because I have learned how to enjoy the life I have--and the life I could have had otherwise--well--I no longer care. I could have been someone different, but I am the person I am now and the 'could have been' doesn't matter. I don't want pity for it--because at this point I'm content and have accepted this person I am now. I can't see myself any other way.

I enjoy being the way I am. I've had a lot of fun in my own way, although certainly unconventional.

Their looks, personality, backstory, what they do during the duration of the story, character development, and if I can relate or sympathize with them.

A character may lack one or two of the criteria above but so long as they remain likable with what else they have from above is fine. Looks aren't everything though and if the backstory is stupid or doesn't justify their present actions I'd probably hate them. If they do stupid things and affect the plot in a bad way, I won't like them. Positive character development is a plus.

Personality/attitude mostly, then realism, then looks. I don't really like perfect characters (aka those "ones who can do absolutely no wrong and never mess up") because they're not as fun/interesting to watch as characters who are genuine and have flaws. For example, I find Armin more interesting than Eren because Armin has more character and realism to him and I feel like he'll get more character development.
