If you're surprised that Star Trek has characters that aren't white you're a bigger idiot than whoever thought Star Trek Enterprise was a good idea.

Is it boredom or lunacy that drives the minds of those folks? Both, perhaps, with a sweet touch of emotional insecurity. I hope that none of the producers is going to take the comments seriously.

Isn't proclaiming racial diversity excludes white people in this scenario tantamount to admitting that white people are the overwhelmingly norm and status quo?

In any case, do Twitter hashtags matter? I would appreciate it as a part of a larger study on culture, but I think a mere sampling is unconvincing that this will take off. Asshats are everywhere, and social media makes it easier to find them.

That being said, I was upset over George Takei's character of Hikaru Sulu being retconned into gay, as of the many changes that bastardized the original Star Trek, but this is a new series, and I do not care. There is nothing to adapt at this point.

Pretty much... this.
I think the conservatives are so fixated on the whole "white genocide" nonsense that they're forgetting (or never have watched the series) that Star Trek started out as being the first to have a "diversified cast". Now that most of the mainstream entertainment industry has "caught up" to Star Trek: The Original Series (in terms of diversity), it was kind of expected to see them try to push the boundaries ever-so-slightly. The assumption that just because one ship has a fully diversified cast doesn't mean that "white genocide the future in space" (or that they're pitching it).

I guess the Conservative SJWs need something to whine about. May as well let them whine.

This does it for me. Despite all the grief women and minorities get for supposedly being overly sensitive, white men are by far the worst in that regard.

Jojo was not excluding everyone, but pointing out that during an era of discrimination, black mathematicians actually did contribute immensely. He did this to discredit the post concerning how "diversity" did not get us to space, when it actually did, in a volatile time before the landing on 1969.

So I do not see how Jojo is wrong. He is not trying to demean everyone else, but fighting against the notion that only whites greatly contributed to the space race, by claiming that black mathematicians did contribute greatly. One of them was a math prodigy in an era where calculations were done mostly on paper.

Also, you have to remember why these stories, which are indeed factually based (Accurately enough) were inspirational, primarily because of the era it takes place in, where blacks were consistently discriminated against, during the height of the Civil Rights Movement. The widespread bigotry did not die with the passage of The Civil Rights Act, it persisted during the lifetimes of many of those women, who were also black, discriminated against in a field primarily dominated by bigoted white males.

It is a different era that is generally acknowledge for stacking the odds against blacks, and should be treated as such, so one wonders why would it not be inspirational for women of that color to succeed? This does not discriminate against whites with similar difficulties, but you can only cram in so many people in one movie, which acknowledges the unjust nature of the era.

Yeah, what octo said.

If you're complaining about diversity in Star Trek you sincerely have no fucking idea what Star Trek is.

what gets me is they are complaining about 1 trailer where we saw just 3 of the main cast (and one of them was in full make up)

there are plenty of other characters we haven't seen yet including Jason Isaacs and Anthony Rapp and last time i checked they were white guys

just look at the cast list https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek:_Discovery#Cast_and_characters to me it seems quite well rounded in terms of ethnic representation

besides what would it matter if there was no white characters, all that should matter is the stories are good and the characters are well written and fleshed out, Gender, Sexuality, Ethnicity none of these things should matter, not to any decent human being that is

If Star Trek's diversity is so damned legendary, why have there never been any Muslim crew members? Or even Muslim citizens? What happened to all the Muslims in Star Trek world?

The federation is big government on a galactic scale...
