I don't think so, most furries don't seem to care about anime or the otaku sub-culture.

Nope.

Furry's are anthropomorphic animals while cat girls are girls with animal features.

Or to put it even more simply;

Cat girl = girl with cat bits

Fury = Cat with girl bits

Even lamia, harpies or centaur aren't furry cause, once again, they are a girl that have been given animal bits while a furry is a god damn bipedal cat with tits.

No. The only thing that makes you a furry is standing up and saying "I'm a furry." Nothing you do will make you a furry unless you actually want to be one, regardless of what anyone else tells you. No matter how many times people scream "FAG" at you from across the playground, it will not make you gay.

Fundamental lack of understanding here, the term furry refers to any form of artistic expression involving both animal and human characteristics on a singular being within. A catgirl, and other such human characters with animal like traits, are technically furry characters.

As far as not many furry's liking something, furry is an art style, so it is highly doubtful that one could really say that someone can not be a furry and something else; in fact many people at my local otaku meetups are in fact furries.

The real question is,

If you like Monster girls does that make you a furry?

Even furry's can't decide. Most are in the Petting Zoo People camp and think Kemonomimi and monster girls are not furry and that there should be a distinction but then are a few who think they do count just to be different or awkward or both.

If they just have cat ears? No.

If they have tails as well? No, but you're getting closer.

If they have other cat features? Things are becoming more and more unclear.

Really, being a furry is just a matter of degree. The moment that the thing you are attracted to is a human-looking animal, as opposed to a human with a few animal-like features, is the moment that it would be considered being a furry.

But this line is vague by nature, and there's no obvious point where you "become" a furry.
