As, sometime this year, they're going to be releasing a third numbered The Guild game called 'The Guild 3', I had been trying to play the various The Guild 2 games and failing miserably.

For those who have not looked at this game series before, The Guild has you playing as a 'Dynasty' of mercantile types falling under the broad classification of Patron (food items), Craftsman (weapons and armor), Scholar (The Church Arcane), or Rogue (Throat Cutters). Your goal, variously, is to get rich, become powerful, kill every other living thing in the world, or die trying. You can become King eventually (for a day), and while waiting for your turn in the Monarch Merry-Go-Round, you can also fill several dozen other political offices complete with backstabbing, bribes, false praise, and blatant sexual harassment. If being King doesn't interest you, you could always be Captain of the Guard or similar and make false arrests, then bluff them into severe punishments.

To maintain your Dynasty, of course, you have to get married, have several children, and hire murderers to protect you, your businesses, your home, your spy network, and your delicate assassination squads. Your party will consist of up to 3 members, and if you remove any members they're no longer eligible to roll with your crew, but they're still your Dynasty.

One person's review was that it wasn't a great game but needed a sequel.

Sounds like any other old MMO to me. Of course the fact douchebaggery is actually a legitimate objective makes it sound interesting

It's not an MMO, but a singleplayer/multiplayer with up to a total of 16 dynasties at once. Not sure if anyone does multiplayer, though.

Hmm less interesting to me then, for this kinda thing I'd need the competition of several hundred if not thousands of faceless and nameless human opponents to make it entertaining. Where's the thrill of beating AI or a small pool of friends?

I can see where you are coming from with that. I'm not sure how popular it would be if scaled up to an MMO, though, because most people seem to want a kind of relentless power fantasy, not the slower more Machiavellian struggles of being a poor farmer who is rising through the ranks of society through the power of beer and ruthless blackmail.

Then again, Eve Online has some of that backstabbing stuff and people seem to get off on it, so there might be a market there.
