Uresei Yatsura I saw...

I'm a fan from the 90's, but even still, I would say...

The ORIGINAL Full Metal Alchemist.

FMA Brotherhood was better animation wise (I would argue even against this, but I'll give this one to fans of Brotherhood at least), but the original FMA had hit emotional levels the second series did not, and was a better overall story with less jarring "stops" for "humor". Brotherhood also makes assumptions that you saw the original (as it starts with basically a "recap" up to where the two series diverge), and and is less like your typical shounen tripe.

Outside of that, there's many classics, and many highly recommendable titles, but few hit as many aspects of different genres. It also has a melancholy yet meaningful ending, which honestly, helps to reaffirm whereas other "cartoons" are willing to give you a happy ending, "anime" as many of us older farts know, does not, even when you want it to, (most of us old people got into anime because it was "adult" or at least, it was animation to tell a story on a budget, not just "for kids" as american animation was).

The nostalgia is strong in this thread.. It's making me want to go rewatch some of the classics... Perhaps I will.. I'm not really watching this season's simulcasts.

Good Idea Captain.. Also have a place in my hart for a anime with a character named Jason In it wearing a mask and carrying around a weapon.

But a little something something to bring back those Nostalgia feelings. Touch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-RnfpmEwGw

If you (ahem) CAN'T watch Urusei Yatsura nowadays , the original Project A-Ko is about as close to the funky-insane, geek in-joked original birth-of-anime UY experience as you can get, aside of the subtitled Sgt. Frog.

(We used to avoid showing it to newbies, worrying they wouldn't get jokes about Captain Harlock or Fist of the North Star. Nowadays, however...)

Of course, the fact that the first A-Ko was animated and directed by many of the episode story animators for the original Mamoru Oshii-era Urusei didn't hurt the similarities either.

Fate/stay night: UBW

I'm not saying that's the best one (I don't even like it all that much), but that's not what this is about.

I'd say UBW has everything. It's got the action, plot, "plot," highschool, some SoL elements, romance, superb animation, iconic characters. If there was something that could represent what anime as a medium is about (which there isn't because it's way more complicated than that), then UBW would be that show in my opinion.

To think all you have to do to get a hot alien wife is to steal her top.. and bare her breast to the world. I used to watch the show all the time.. did you know in 2007 all episodes of Urusei Yatsura was on Crunchyroll.

There are SO many similarities between Lum and Barbara Eden's performance as Jeannie, I would go back and watch old 60's I Dream of Jeannie reruns and absolutely crack up at how dead-on Eden's Jeannie was as Lum's "ancestor"--
Anyone who still makes the old feminist whines about "Oh, a guy's got a hot girl in his apartment who calls him 'Master'" just doesn't know what Major Nelson or Ataru Moroboshi had to go through....

Ah, the pirate days...Now, you have to look in other waters for pirate streaming sites.

Cowboy Bebop. Pretty much the perfect series without having any dull episodes. Music, animation, characters, story are all top notch.

I'd have to say Space Battleship Yamato, or better known in america as Star Blazers. It really started it all for me.
