Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. I know everyone sucks up to this show, but to me, it is the definition of quintessential (It is not my favorite anime though).

If you (ahem) CAN'T watch Urusei Yatsura nowadays

To think all you have to do to get a hot alien wife is to steal her top.. and bare her breast to the world. I used to watch the show all the time..

There are SO many similarities between Lum and Barbara Eden's performance as Jeannie, I would go back and watch old 60's I Dream of Jeannie reruns and absolutely crack up at how dead-on Eden's Jeannie was as Lum's "ancestor"--
Anyone who still makes the old feminist whines about "Oh, a guy's got a hot girl in his apartment who calls him 'Master'" just doesn't know what Major Nelson or Ataru Moroboshi had to go through....

Funny you should mention that as I believe I read the creators of the original Tenchi Muyo OVAs also mentioned I Dream of Genie's Barabara Eden as inspiring Ryoko. That show must have influenced a whole generation of anime makers

But still, take a IDOJ episode where Tony's buddy Roger, the would-be swinging bachelor, lines up double blind-dates for Saturday night, and Tony tries to assert authority by telling Jeannie, "I'm going out on my date, and I'm going to be back late tonight, so I don't want you to worry over me."
And Jeannie, without showing the slightest bit of negative reaction to it, replies "Oh, I shall not be worried, Master: (immediately creates a locked iron cage in the living room) Now you do not have to go on your date, and I shall not have to worry about you! "

...No character on US TV before or since could ever spiritually be THAT much Lum.

These seem to just be a declaration of how old you are (I was a Speed/Yamato kid.)

Things I've actually recommended recently include Galko-chan, Toradora, Future Diary, and Dragon Maid. I'm waiting for the right person to recommend Hayate or Tsukigakirei to.

Speaking of old fashioned, maybe this seems too obvious to veterans as yourselves, but ~

I would say either Cowboy Bebop or Berserk.

Those two are classics.
