Congress is under no obligation to admit states, even in those areas whose population expresses a desire for statehood.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Admission_to_the_Union#Admission_process

so even if the entire Puerto Rico wants to become an official State, it needs permission from the majority in Congress to actually become one. given that the Puerto Rico is trying to join to alleviate their debt, it's dubious whether the Congress will welcome them with open arms.

They are bankrupt because of their socialist government. Forget statehood, we should strip territory status from them and let them pay their own bills.

Puerto Rico is a self-governing commonwealth. I think they still have to abide by federal laws... not sure how it exactly works though. They elected socialists, socialists ran out of other peoples money, now they are in debt and want the U.S. to bail them out. The fact that they are a territory of the USA is the only thing keeping them from sinking as low as Venezuela.

They voted against statehood 4 times, when they were not in such bad shape. Now watch them all vote to get on the gravy train.

And this must be one of the Capitalist propaganda which use the tactics of: misattribution, projection, explanation by faulty logic, and the repetition of flawed logic. You should stop repecting your Capitalist fantasy and stop using the Socialists to embody your shameful charcater: you should stop assuming that the invisible hand is need for meritocracy; humans can enforce meritocratic if they work hard enough. Also, the invisible hand of the market cannot magically generate wealth out of nothing. I already clarify the Venezuela issue in the Venezuela Protest topic.

You do know its because of restrictions U.S have on them while not giving them the benefits of being a state to alleviate the burden is a part of why they are in a crisis right? I mean, you can do a little bit of research instead of just trying to say "they ruined themselves due to socialism". Actually capitalism is a major reason why they are in a debt crisis and they can't control it.

I also don't get your reasoning here since most of the red states are also debt ridden and only stable due to being part of U.S.

What are the biggest pros and cons of them becoming a state? It seems like it would be a bit costly if they become a state. Is there a positive side?

Puerto Rico actually voted for Statehood some years ago. But since there was no real progress the vote is happening again

Yeah, I was going to say, they voted to be a state a few times if I remember correctly. They were against it. I wouldn't welcome them personally. They just want to jump on the bandwagon at this point. They made mistakes and are paying for it for not joining earlier.

Pros would mainly be in their favor for a long time, but it would be the right thing for U.S to do since it is part of the reason they are in the mess they are in (read what I earlier to AppleFart). Same needs to happen with other U.S territories.

First of all congress wont allow us into the union. Also we arent commies or socialists. Third a large amount of us have no interest in joining, the statehood party is supremely currupt and were some of the first to dig the economical hole its in. We are not poor. We dont want any of ur nasty gravy. Like a previous poster said "do some research".
