Post Reply Would you say Dragon Ball is the most recognizable anime/manga worldwide?

I would say Pokémon because (like everyone else pointed out) Pokémon has been around forever and has tons of instalments. I haven't personally seen it but it had a long anime, some movies, Pokémon Go, and over a dozen games for Nintendo consoles which were insanely popular until a few years ago with Xbox and PlayStation. Anyways, Pokemon appeals to a huge age range. Naruto and Dragon Ball are pretty close behind, though. I've also heard that One Piece and Attack on Titan are pretty big in Japan but I have yet to see for myself.

I'm sad to say that Speed Racer probably died with the live action John Goodman vehicle.

As for market saturation, before Pokémon it was probably Transformers, which is why that one guy with the explosions got five or six movies out of it.

Gotta agree here.

I think while Pokemon may be well recognized how many people know it has an anime and only associate it with the game? And if we're going to go with a criteria of mixing knowledge of a game with an associated anime what about things like Street Fighter?

I would also agree that Pokemon is more recognizable. My mom (who isn't really fluent in English) saw me wearing these sweatpants with Pikachu on them and told me she was surprised that I've always loved Pokemon since I was 5. She only knows about anime because of the crap in my room but she can always specifically point out Pokemon when she sees it. Everything else is Naruto to her.

And I think more people can recognize the anime than they can the games, even if they don't know it's anime. When you mention Pokemon a lot of people might say "I love Pokemon! I used to watch it all the time" rather than "I played it when I was little!".
