But that's the whole point. Once you're in the clinch then your punches to the face can't really do much. There's a reason why BJJ dominates boxing in an octagon.

You're welcome.

You know what dominates outside the octagon? Running.

Obviously, especially if they have a weapon or they are way stronger than you. However, it is not always an option if you are cornered so having some sort of self-defense skills can at least help to some extent in those scenarios.

No. I'm not one to fight back unless I feel legitimately threatened. It's not like hitting me makes someone worthy of my aggression--most ain't worth that time or effort (certainly the potential consequences).

Knowing me I'd probably just get into psychological warfare most of the time.

Yeah. You hit me and it's open season on your face.

This is good advice for a real threat.

That last bit you're describing is what we call Pompous Peacock Syndrome

I have no capability nor capacity for combat; and I think I'm safe assuming the great majority here also do not. It's not out of pretentiousness, but concern that people here aren't actually thinking these things through. If you mean my remark about "chauvinistic silliness", that is exactly what so many here are stating, but if there are other interpretations, I'm more that happy to be corrected.

Yes, you always wait for them to hit you first, then it's self defence.

I'm lucky nobody is stupid enough to hit me first. I wish someone was though, just once

Yes I do. I believe if someone hits you you have every right to defend yourself and show your attacker that you mean business.

To be fair ring fighting isn't a good metric to gauge a street fight. You think pulling guard in a street fight is a good idea?
Anything is a weapon and its fair game, no rules with means attacks you typically don't witness in MMA are in play. Plus BJJ is sort useless against more than 1 enemy. Go to the ground 1v1 sure it might work, but if the idiot you are fighting has lackies to beat the daylights out of you while you are on the ground, well good luck with that.

Well, there's a reason why I keep saying "clinch" rather than "pull guard".

Of course! Can't debate you on that.

The Japanese have karate. The Chinese have kung fu. The Thai have kickboxing... and the French have parkour - the art of running away.
