Are there jobs out there that won't let you have a second job?

This question may or may not make sense, but I needed to know.


I know some jobs don't care if you're working other jobs. I've seen it where people had more than one job and everything is fine.

But is there a certain type of job that won't allow you to get a second job? Like you have to work at that job only and nowhere else.

Would having your own a business qualify as that or no?


What do you think? Forgive me if these questions sound silly to you.

Generally the only job that will care if you are working another job is 1. On call work (because generally they want you to be always available) there are exceptions to this if you are only on call for certain hours/days and 2. In the case where the other job starts affecting your ability to do the first job because of fatigue or scheduling issues. I personally ran my own business and worked a job so that's generally fine. As long as the two aren't interfering or there isn't some conflict of interest (maybe you are working for a competitor) generally its fine

Yes I have heard of jobs not wanting an employee to have a second job. Second jobs tend to decrease overall performance.

This is like one of those questions that directly relate to my current situation.

There ARE certain jobs that don't let you work another job, and this is most often due to conflict of interest, where there is a possibility that you may be working for the competition - be it directly or indirectly.

Sometimes, the reasoning is that the organization wants you to be readily available at their beck and call and would rather not share your availability enslavement to them.

Having a business may or may not be considered a second job, but in my case, I have already long established business way before they asked me to become a part of their organization, and I've specifically made it clear that I would NOT be at their beck and call because I have other things that are more important to me than the job.

Typically, if they don't ask, there's no reason for you to tell them if you have another job, especially if it doesn't overlap with your schedule with that particular organization. And as long as you've got your work done and can keep the upper management pleased, there should be absolutely no problem why you can't be employed elsewhere, especially if the said company doesn't pay a sufficiently decent salary.

Its debatable what sort of jobs / companies / individual employers might not like you having a second job. But as for ones that won't even let you have a second job that would be right in your employee contract. And typically would be things like non-compete clauses, conflict of interest or security issues.

Depending on the job there might be a secondary PR angle to it like a morality clause. AKA why every child actor raised in the Disney stable seems to lose their god damn mind the moment they hit 18.

Most full-time salaried jobs will tell you this. In some states, however, the policy is "unenforceable" - they can tell you all they want, but the law backs your right to have another job if you damn well please. Usually, these are what we call "right to work" states, which carry the additional burden that while your boss cannot fire you for having another job... he can totally just fire you for no reason at all.

Sometimes I have had to shutter my business while working for a particular employer, but that's when my employer was a direct competitor. If you're in a different industry than your employer, the law will usually back your right to own and operate a small business while employed.

The Active Duty Army is a full time job - on call 24 hours 7 days a week. Job usually is 0630-1630 for Soldiers and 0530-1900 for officers on week days (although my dad spends more time than this working especially getting ready for deployment - also significant weekend work as well). When they are training in the field or deploy the hours are even longer. Not sure how you could take a second job.

There are exceptions to all rules....some medical personnel I know in the Air Force - example Doctors can moonlight for more money in the local community depending on the job. Personnel can ask for exceptions but commanders have to approve....This is rare these days because of the amount of deployments. This was a non starter during the height of the war. But some units have a low chance of deployment and they may get approval.

I know one of my dad's soldiers just got in trouble for moonlighting on the side without permission as it became a real problem when they got a no notice deployment. He is facing charges. Of course they probably won't convict because of the circumstances (debt and family) but he will face some kind of punishment for not following the rules (from what I understand if he would of told someone about his problem the sergeants could of fixed it - the Army has so many programs for help and such a large support network). I know - Army Brat for years....

Some jobs are time limited per regs, such as school bus drivers or CDL holders, so while they can get second jobs, they only have X amount of hours to play in each week.

Yes. I'm an engineer and while I am not banned from having a 2nd job in my contract, other than teaching part time (like at a University), tutoring, or doing something hobby related (writing, craft stuff, etc) that happens to make some money on the side it is kind of frowned upon in my field.

That being said in the past I've worked two jobs at a time, usually a "day" job (camp counselor/manufacturing tech) and a "night job" (waiting tables, etc.). Outside of professional jobs not many will ban you outright from another job, but rather with erratic scheduling it can often be impossible.

Basically this, if it isn't in your written in your contract and doesn't interfere with you working hours, either mention it upon getting hired that you already have a 2nd job (which I've done a few times and honestly my past employers were ok with it, they understood I was a broke college student) or just keep quiet about it.

You are not necessarily forbidden from having another job, but the bank that I work for does require us to get approval from them before we do so. It mostly has to do with conflict of interest, as others have said. For example, if I took on a second job as a stock broker and successfully invested in companies who do business with the bank, it might look like I had engaged in insider trading, using my connection with the bank to get privileged information not available to the public. Somewhat more relevant to your question, one would need special approval to hold any executive position within another company, again because of the risk that one could utilize confidential info while operating the other business.

I'm an electrician, and although its not technically forbidden to get a second job. It is unrealistic. The first reason being if its even remotely related to my field of work its a violation of non compete clause( I cant even work at Best Buy). The second is my hours literally change from day to day. At times this has lead to me working 30hr shifts. I am expected to arrive at my primary job on time every day. To get a second job would likely get me fired from one or both for scheduling conflicts

Thats a really grey area. I guess I would have to ask what you consider a job. Many presidents have founded and ran non profit companies while in office.

As many others have said, most of the times the stipulation of not moonlighting or having a second job is primarily based on conflict of interest (especially when it's a direct competitor). In the medical field, it's common that moonlighting isn't accepted because you'd be exhausting yourself (working 24 hours in a row or multiple days in a row is a liability). I've had a few jobs that meet the first condition - whereas you cannot work for a direct competitor and if you take a similar job (i.e. Programmer/Engineer) at a different company then you're going to be terminated if you're found out.
