I noticed in a US TV-guide (forgot which one) that SWO3 will be shown in early 2018, but I can't get that verified on LiveChart. Anyone know anything about this?

To anyone that was able to watch the SAO Ordinal Scale film to the very end they would have seen the after credits message that said "SAO will return." Considering how huge of a success the anime franchise has been as well as the film, it is no surprise that they want to make more SAO.

Unfortunately there are always tabloid articles making fake news by claiming when shows will get more seasons. The most accurate sources of anime news are Crunchyroll and Anime News Network. If you ever see an anime blog (that is not CR or ANN) claiming SAO season 3 is gonna come out in XYZ date, don't believe it right away. So since there are no official claims when season 3 is coming out, we'll just have to wait patiently when ANN, Aniplex USA or Crunchyroll news reports it.

Everything lenalee-chan said is correct.

Any site or blog currently claiming SAO has a third season is considered misinformation until a big site such as CR, ANN, or Japanese blog reports it.

Well, it seems to me that it would happen under normal circumstances given how popular this is, but the one thing to consider is that the next arc is really, really long. It would take five cours to tell it at the pace the first two seasons went. But in any case, it's just speculation and nothing more than that.

Lenalee-Chan is right: I saw Ordinal Scale in theaters and at the end, there was a after-credit scene with Kikuoka and Prof. Shigemura that ended with the text "SAO will return".
While this may be cryptic for the anime-only fans of SAO, anyone who has read the light-novels, especially the arc that starts at volume nine, knows that everything that was in the trailer (the mention of the top-down AI, the guy in the glasses who was sitting in front of the computer, and DEFINITELY the name "Rath") is all from the light-novels that haven't been turned into an anime yet. So yeah, it was definitely a teaser for the Alicization Arc (which is light-novels 9-19, though only volumes 9 and 10 are currently available in the US). However, the release date is unknown, as there has been no direct confirmation from Aniplex or Reki Kawahara.

This article points out that a "new development of the SAO project" will be announced at an event in October. Probably Sword Art Online Season 3?

Has the writing improved in the manga?

SAO was an interesting concept but the script and plot were dog crap.
