Is 4chan the greatest cultural achievement of the century? No, that honor goes to assorted Nigerian princes and their wonderful investment opportunities. Any day now...

Let's remember that 4chan is only one of many imageboards, even if you only include the English ones. It's the biggest right now, though it has changed overtime, and many members have left for other ones. 8ch in particular was relevant for a bit during the interesting phenomenon that was Gamergate.

Anyways, the biggest? Meh, wait until the end of the century especially with how technology keeps progressing at a high speed rate. I would agree that it was significant though. It gives nonmainstream views a platform to exist and proliferate even when those views are abhorred by the mainstream. Though to be fair, if 4chan or some other imageboard didn't hold such type of views, some other part of the internet would do so (like IRC or whatever). That's the danger of casually dismissing nonmainstream points of view; they get to gather followers in the shadow without anyone to oppose them with fair debate.

@kinga750 Personally speaking, it's because reddit has gotten mainstream friendly that it has a less obvious impact on said mainstream. 4chan and those of the same vein are easier to demonize.

You have been to 4chan right? Are you a 4chan user? No. they don't let you people out on the rest of the internet. I'm surprised they let 4chan users out of there straight jackets long enough to get to a keyboard.

As of right now, /pol/ is a positive presence. They exceed at challenging the views of the left in a way that provokes further debate. This isn't to say that the left is always wrong and that /pol/ is always correct, but I think /pol/'s talent for making people ask questions in our current climate, in which more and more people seem to despise diversity in political views, is important. The use of Kekistan as a way to mock identity politics is especially genius. Only time will tell if /pol/ will continue to serve as an effective devil's advocate or if it will instead turn into something poisonous.

It's also kind of amusing that people take their shit posting seriously. Um, they're trolls. Everyone knows that, right? They're trolls. When they do things like create a Kekistani flag that mimics a Nazi WWII war flag, doesn't it cross people's minds that the whole goal is to... oh I don't know... piss people off and make a point by doing so?

They did this, though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vw9zyxm860Q

Regardless of political affiliation, this is quite amusing.
