The coup alienated liberals in Iran as well. Mossadegh is widely considered to be the closest thing Iran has ever had to a democratic leader. He openly championed democratic values and hoped to establish a democracy in Iran. The elected parliament selected him as prime minister, a position he used to reduce the power of the shah, thus bringing Iran closer in line with the political traditions that had developed in Europe. But any further democratic development was stymied on Aug. 19.

Hey, if you know a better way to try and preemptively stop bellbottoms than overthrowing a government and ruining diplomatic relations for decades leading to an oppressive theocracy I'd like to hear it mister.

From the first paragraph:

Central Intelligence Agency’s central role in the 1953 coup that brought down Iranian Prime Minister Muhammad Mossadegh, fueling a surge of nationalism which culminated in the 1979 Iranian Revolution and poisoning U.S.-Iran relations into the 21st century.

This is about US installing the Shaw which the Islamic revolution overthrew. At least read the first paragraph.

First, I'm obviously making a joke.

Second, how is that any different than what I said? You tried to overthrow a government ( aka a coup ). It ruined relations between both countries ( poisoning US - Iran relations ). It lead to an oppressive theocracy ( 1979 revolution ).

I can only conclude you somehow thought I was seriously suggesting the CIA launched a preemptive international strike on bellbottoms.
