I know 3 people in the military. All 3 say that they don't like it. they say it is bearable, but that they recruiters do lie and sugar coat things. And the military isn't like a desk job, they MAKE you stay in once you sign the papers, there is no trial period. Once you sign bam you are stuck for 3 years.

He didn't say it was sugary or sweet, he just said that recruiters made it sound better then what it is.

I don't see why it shouldn't be 18. You are your own person, under law your old enough to smoke, drive, and enter into *legal agreements*.

All your doing is entering into a legal agreement.

Now, what's fucked up is that being 18 I'm old enough to die for my country, but not old enough to drink.

the military is crappp

Why can't they all just drop their weapons and go home?
Who wants to devote their lives to being a soldier?

Believe it or not, becoming a highly trained elite killing machine is enough sugar coating for some of us (especially me)

its just a job like any other. some people are better suited to it than others. just be glad its a volunteer army here. in other countries, its mandatory to join the military for a couple of years.

I think the military is honorable. But it is dishonest with how they get you to join.

Well, duh they make you stay. You signed a freaking contract. Any company will do the same, thats the freaking point of a contract. And the recruiters definitely don't lie. Once again, they may "sugar coat" things, but thats only opinion and perspective. They'll say "Yeah, its a lot of fun. You get stronger, meet new people, they pay for your college, etc." Sure, maybe they don't mention the things people don't like, but its in the contract. And all of that is true. You get stronger, you meet new people, they pay for college and most of the people that join find it fun. If it'll make you feel any better want me to let you talk to my friend in the national guard when he comes back? Its OBVIOUSLY not a desk job by the way. Even the commercials and posters don't show some guy at the desk in the military. xD Who thought it was a desk job?

I know a guy in the military, he's a striker repairman. All he does all day is sit in a housing area and sweeps the place all day for a pretty nice salary. That's a sweet job, so they are there in the military.
Not saying all of them are though, I would never go military.

Not all of them are highly trained killing machines. In fact, in a hand fight you might not have such a bad chance against a military man if your experienced. They're trained to shoot with a bit of judo. that's all. Training alone doesn't make you a bad-ass, you need mentality.

I never said it was a desk job, I am saying desk jobs don't make you stay. You can always quit, but with the military you are branded into this large legal contract for many years. good if people think it's fun. But most 18 year olds think killing and living like a soldier is fun. I am just saying that 21 would be a more appropriate age because you are more mature. The military preys on teens just coming out of highschool who don't really have a plan yet. so they join the military as a last resort because there isn't anything left for them.

But when you are desperate don't have the money for a college education, someone that comes and say that they will pay you and give you a free college education is like god.

They do sugar coat everything like saying how nice it is (Don't believe me look at those retarded commercials they spew out). Most people think that they won't be sent to Iraq. maybe some other place but not Iraq. But the truth is you are going to go there and if you are going anywhere in the middle -east you do have a higher chance of dying.

If you don't have at least a basic outline of the world as it really by 18, I think you need something to give you a swift kick in the ass.

I also don't like how the commercials make you seem like a better person and more "masculine" for joining the military. It is a tough job yes. But does putting up with retarded boot camp leaders and generals that treat you like crap really make you more masculine? It's like you become their slave.

It's not any different then how military has worked for the last two thousand years.

Some companies do have contracts where you have to stay for x number of years, unless they fire you. My BF's current job is like that and it's a corporate job. The military will also discharge you if you're not suitable so it's the same.
