I am getting the impression the [cancel membership] button in settings is only way.

...or resorting to blocking just that element with adblock.

Can confirm. Blocking these elements with Adblock Plus works quite well. Don't see it anymore.

Also blocked the bar that goes across the top.

Kind of lame that I am getting ads when I am paying a monthly subscription.

These popups are crashing my browser. As a paying customer, this is fucking ridiculous. I can't go to the list of shows without your site crashing firefox.

Adblock works on ad-spam....it doesn't fix the issue of "Due to high traffic please refresh or go to VRV" bullshit. It's like they're trying to force that on their viewers. If anything I think any interest that I might have had for VRV got killed by these annoyances. Next stop is cancelling my sub lol good going here

The more people who move to VRV, the fewer people there are on CR during high traffic hours, reducing congestion.

There doesn't need to be congestion. The technical hurdle of using resources from both services is less than the legal hurdle of pooling licensing, which they have already done. Crunchyroll is going to pull the plug.

They are on two separate infrastructures, and Ellation is currently building out new infra to better support the CR service: https://medium.com/ellation-tech/stabilizing-improving-crunchyroll-service-c44c53789e86.
